I understand what the OP is getting at. Hopefully its something along the same lines as this:
I know we both suck at drag racing. We went out for a Ladies Night (she got in and raced for free), and we both had a blast. We will be doing it again this spring/summer since it seems to calm her impulse to race everyone, only happened AFTER I got her the MS6. I expect the results to be even more lopsided since I have finally done a little work to her car now. Life is short, have fun along the way. BTW, if you get the 8 you will get beat. If you are like me you wont care.

I smell that this thread has trolling written all over it. But nonetheless, I have the satisfaction of having both an SRT-4 and an RX-8. The SRT-4 is my DD while the 8 is my weekend "fun" car and both cars have their own merits. The SRT-4 is a great DD, point and shoot power, decent handling (enough to still be quite fun) and returns 25-27 mpg for me on the daily commute. Quite good compared to the 8. The 8 hands down wows me with the handling, but can't put a light at-all against the grunt of the SRT-4. 2nd gear and 3rd gear torque on that thing is crazy. Nonetheless I always miss the awesome handling of the 8 on the weekends over some twisty roads. So to each their own experiences, but just have both : )

Just laugh at your boyfriend he has an f-ing neon for gods sake! An 8 will roast that car on a track! Regardless of performance what would you rather drive an RX8 or a neon? I for one wouldn't be caught dead in a neon. The only thing worse than a civic is a neon!

The SRT-4 NEON is widley recognized as being a very poorly built, cheap, unreliable, ugly Neon that is fast. If power is all you're looking for then The rx-8 is not the choice for you.
So the answer to your questions is no, the neon will be faster in a straight line no matter what you do to your 8 ( outside of spending a TON of money) . So while the neon will be faster, it wont handle nearly as nice, the fit and finish on the interior will be cheaper, and it doesnt even come close to being as beautiful as the 8. At the end of the day all he really has is a front wheel drive neon.
So my advice is if you really like the rx-8 and want one, then who cares if its slower than his car. Buy the 8 and tell your boyfriend to buy a real car.

i have a 97 neon as well.... (sprt highline sedan) had to repaint it do to paint defect (at my cost), timing belt went out, another belt (cant remember which) is loose and squeaks really badly, engine knocks. keep in mind this has been in my family since day 1 (was special ordered by parents), and has given us plenty of trouble. not saying i hate the car, just defiantly wouldnt qualify it as a cool car.
