"It Looks Like We Are Going To Have To Get You A New Engine, Sir"

My CEL came on a while back. I took it in ("Likely a sensor....",said the service mgr). "Please bring the car back, as we don't have the part in stock."

Visit #2: "While replacing the sensor, we noticed some more problems. We are going to have to replace the entire intake assembly; please bring it back, as we don't have the parts in stock ."

The Phone Call: " Hello sir, while working on the intake assembly, we discovered some more issues, so it looks like we are going to have to get you a new engine."

I was speechless, yet nothing shocks me with this car! I'm still waiting for the full story, .....

My lease is up in 16 months and I've been contemplating whether or not to buy it out. I love the car, but this makes me really nervous in terms of long term reliablity. I'm thinking that the G35 coupe that I was going to buy in the first place might be a safer bet!

I hear you...my CEL is almost constantly on. One time I had to have the APV motor replaced because of carbon buildup, and another time they replaced the o2 sensor. Other than that, it goes on for a few days then off for a few days. I am really sick of this. And on top of that , I am noticing lately than when I am cruising on the freeway for a long period of time and use an exit ramp and get to a stop sign, I will have no power when leaving the stop sign. It takes awhile for it to kick in again. Is this when I am supposed to go in for the compression test and have them tell me I need a new engine? I think that '07 350z I test drove a couple of weeks ago is starting to look really appealing. I still love my 8 but am totally frustrated with it at the same time.

Now here is a though, instead of blaming Mazda, why not blame nations who require the computer to watch and control every aspect of the running of the motor. I mean, look at the days before OBD2 (1995 and older), when we actually had throttle cables. Just a thought.

To add to it, every other car on the market has the system now, some (like BMW and VW) have been known to do some really crazy things like lock the passengers in the car till the battery died. Any other car you buy can have these same issues because of EPA law.

Now there are plenty of RX-8s with a decent amount miles, I've got 32K miles on the 8 and 235K on the RX-7.

It is kinda funny how some cars of become unreliable because of all the new fandangled sensors and what have you. I think audi and VW are good examples of this.

New Motor Is In!

Just got my car back; I am pretty pumped that it only took 8 days to bring the new engine in and install it. It turns out that when they had the intake off, they noticed that coolant had somehow leaked into housing in the block, which means new engine required! I'm hoping that this is one of those above 13 mpg engines all of the guys on this forum are always gloating about!

Just passed 40k miles on mine this week. I've had all the regular maintenance done, TSBs checked etc. I'm good to go. None of all these problems others have had.

I *love* my 8!

Congrats on your brand spankin' new engine!
