Loose storage compartment door

Does the sliding cover over your storage compartment have any play in it when closed?

You know, the one hiding the cupholders, where you rest your shifting arm.

The front of mine (towards shifter) moves side to side. I can't remember if it used to do that.

If you open the cover (tilt up), you'll see an L-shaped tab which slides into a groove in the box, securing it. If you look close, you'll see a small plastic piece snapped onto that tab... which keeps popping off on mine.

However, even when snapped back on, the cover wiggles back and forth.

I'll have Mazda look at it eventually, but I'm just curious if that play is normal...?

Mine does this all the time since the day I got it... it's ANNOYING to say the least, and after taking it for my first service, now the button that slides the armrest is also popping out & slanted. A friend of mine has an 8 & says hers doesn't do this at all.

GRRRRRRRRR

I had the button pop out slanted after 8K miles but I was able to fix it my self. I am working on a DIY to show how to fix it. Basically with the heat of the summer one of the tabs/stopper started to flex to the point that it pops out of the housing. I did fixed the tab by using a hair dryer. Hopefully I will have the DIY posted soon. By the way, after the fix it hasn't happened again at 12K miles

The over is not designed to open when it is in position under your elbow.

It needs be slid rearward so the tabs won't break. Once is all it takes to tabs and it will never be the same.

True, I'm sure I've popped it open before it was slid all the way back.

And I take one thing back: it does NOT wiggle when the tab is on. When I tested it earlier and it wiggled, I didn't realize the dang thing had popped off again, lol. So hopefully a new tab thingie will fix it for good.

Lemme guess... those tabs probably run around $25 each?

You can't get the tabs last I checked..Some were replaced WAY back when the sales guys (no caps on purpose) broke them.. If you have a good dealer maybe they can replace the console lid... :D

I also had the problem of the 'slanted button', and there is a LOT of play in the sliding lid.

Took my car into the deal for my oil change, he looked at it and said they'll replace entire lid assembly under warranty. No problem at all.

So far very happy with dealer service (Bob Moore in Oklahoma City).

Bottom line is guys.. this is a problem with EVERY SINGLE RX-8.. and the ones without the problem don't use it as an armrest or are very careful with it. Don't let your passenger use it as an armest or to push off of when they get out..and don't do it yourself and it will last alot longer. Mazda engineers really should have spent an extra 30 min. branstorming this one....

Yeah I too have the slanted button in addition to the loose lid (it annoys the hell out of me). I'll eathier end up taking it to the dealer or just have my friend at the machine fhop make me a METAL button.

Yeah, I notice that it often gets pushed off its track because my passenger has been resting on it. I just pop it back on when that happens... it doesn't appear to be a big deal.

I'd be interested in either a metal frame/clips so that it wouldn't get broken by normal use, or an entire aluminium cover. If your machine shop friend could make these, I'd buy 1 or 2, and it might become a staple of this group like the grills from Hymee and others.

A clean, machined cover or even just clip assembly would be great if we could find someone to make them.

Once I get one made i'll test it out and verify that it will fit and work properly (I dont know about the aluminum cover part though, I just need the damn clip to be metal/aluminum). Anyways i'll keep you guys posted.

Mine was slanted, too—dealer replaced under warranty. My new one doesn't slide back completely smoothly, feels a little rough. I wonder if a little WD-40 would help.

My whole cover actually comes right off. Mine is terrible. It doesn't "click" and lock when I slide it back. And the whole thing wiggles hella bad. My car is a used 04 and it has no more stock warranty. I got an "extended" warranty from my dealer, would that be able to fix it?

I know this is a very old thread but does anyone have a picture of the said "clip" that pops out? On my used RX8, the cover has a play, but I can't figure out what and where the clip is.
