Interesting factoid I noticed is that people with REALLY nice and EXPENSIVE cars tend to compliment the 8 more than lo-lifes in their ricers. I've had, among others, STS, Ferrari, G35, A8, Vets, even BMW'ers... people like these take the bother to come over and talk a bit.. as well as an inordinate number of young peops in any old car too or just yell standing on the side of the street - 'hey man, nice car' that kind of thing.

I mean..no matter what comes out of your mouth, no matter what you know of the 8s performance, you gotta look at an 8 and at least 'think' - "WW! - that's one hot lookin car!"

Me and the wife were driving in town last week and some teenagers in a terrible broken doen looking civic stopped at the light in the lane next to me and we hear a young girl say.."pull up somemore...look at that car...hey! What kinda car is that anyway..that's hot!"

I tell here and she says "...and how come the older guys with the hot cars always have cute young chicks with them?...look at that!"

Which really made my wifes evening a bit cheerier I think...although the other comment really didn't do much for me - the old guy - haha!

 

Don't worry about it, just go for a ride in their 350z and bash the interior of it, if you need to feel better, or bash them on what they paid for it, or bash them on it's handling, or bash them on no back seats, or bash them on no suicide doors, or..............

Who cares? I've owned cars ranging from a '67 VW beetle to a car with a 4-bbl 455 cubic inch engine. They were all fun in one way or another. Remove street-racing from the equation and there's not much to argue about. The people who are into dis'ing cars are probably also the ones voted "most likely to end up wrapped around a telephone pole". Doubly applicable if the debate is within the auspices of a computer game.

 

As with most things in life, the people who have to boast the loudest are usually the ones who are the most insecure with whatever they're going on about. That way, you focus on how loud and obnoxious they are, rather then on their shortcomoings. It's the quiet ones who you know have it good. You'll never hear me talk **** about another car or claim my 8 is better.

In fact, when people ask me if I like it, the first thing I tell them is that it lacks in torque. The clueless scoff and walk away, but the classy ask "well, then tell me what you like about it." 20 minutes later they usually cut me off and ask for a ride.

If you were buying the 8 to impress everyone, you probably should have just bought a more mainstream car.

 

There is no need to bash anything. You bought the car because you liked it, or at least thats the reason you should have bought it for. As the old saying goes "to each his own".

Me personally, I get heat from my friends about my Eclipse. I have the third generation Eclipse GS, so it's a non-turbo I4, that is kind of slow. So they tell me that I have the slowest Eclipse ever made yatta yatta. But my car is gorgeous (remember beauty is in the eye of the beholder), it also handles like a dream (FWD is very easy to handle). My car gets respect from all of my friends because of it's handling abilities. There is a particular street in my neighborhood, that shall remained un-named, in which I like to push my car on. It is quite twisty and the twists vary from sharp to very sharp. I push my "little slow Eclipse" to 75-85 MPH through these twisties and in the process make my friends jaws drop to the floor.

If people hate on your car, I'd rather take the approach of... "Yeah? Watch this..."

A lot of people hate on the RX-8 for the plain reason that it looks faster than it is, which I'll concede to. I'd rather have a car that looks faster than it is, than to have a car that is faster than it looks. The asthetic aspect of a car is very important, I will never understand people that buy fugly cars because they're fast, or because they have potential.

As for CS, I used to play the game WAY too much and I always brought cars into the chat, in between headshots, bomb diffusals and hostage killing. I always defended whatever car I was advocating by stating what it does, not compared to anything else, just let people know what the car does best, if that isn't a priority in a car to them then screw em.

 

I haven't had anything but compliments over and over again??? Yes WRX's owners think we suck oh well, 350Z owners too oh well, oh-blah-di! Weren't all these cars in C&D's past few 10 best all good cars. Have to say I hate Z's though, there ugly nose to there many problems too, just think it's quality and performance aren't that great at all. I pretty much fliped a coin to decide between an STI and 8. I can just stare at an 8, you do that to a STI you might go blind

Isn't it funny, the folks who like the 8, are genearlly people who drive the exotics, like Porsche, Aston Martin, Farari's etc.. Do you think some of just stems from jealously ? I have a relative who is CHP, and he said they hate them too. They hunt for them!

In regards to this... I think the main reason why drivers of exotics can appreciate the 8 is because they are the same type of enthusiast.. they simply have more discretionary income to play with. I guess they see that Its about more than simply speed and handling. Mind you all those cars can boogie and handle, but they didnt have to spend well into the six figures on a car to accomplish this and they know it.... coulda bought an EVO for peanuts that goes 0-60 in the 4s and handles like a ****....coulda bought an Elise for peanuts as well and we all know what they can do....

But they chose to buy a sweet car that many can argue to be somewhat "unnecessary" .. and they are happy.

Disclaimer to the trolls: As much as you'd like to beleive it, In no way am I saying an 8 and a Ferrari are at the same level... more or less making a point based on the principle behind it so relax

There may be some sort of rivalry between you guys and Z owners, but for the most part WRX and STi owners respect the RX-8. They may think the car isn't as fast or moddable as they would like, but all the WRX owners I know that have driven the RX-8 liked the car overall.

C'mon, it's some 15 year old dork that probably doesn't even own a car let alone an Evo or STi.

 

I like the nose on this 8 ... must be an early version photo... almost has the new 06 Miata type look

 

I overwhelmingly get compliments and positive remarks about my car, which I have to admit is nice, and haven't talked to anyone that actually disliked the car really. That includes a friend who owned an STI for a while. I don't know any 350Z owners personally, but I occassionally see one check out my car on the road just like I check out their cars at times. I think they're both great looking cars really.

I think a lot of that stuff comes from people finding too much of their identity/self worth in a car rather than just enjoying driving a really great car and letting others enjoy their different but also really great car. The only reason to bash another one of those cars is if you're trying to make yourself feel better or superior in some way b/c your car is better than joe's car b/c it does xyz better/faster/whatever.

And even if I didn't get any of those positive comments about my car, I love the way it looks, I feel like it's Christmas every time I open the garage door, and I have a blast driving it. So why would it matter anyway?

Bashing our 8 is a sign of insecurity IMO.

It's funny, but Thursday night on I5, I was approached by a 350Z, who came up beside me and then floored it and sped off as if I was going to chase him. Then came a G35 with a lady driving it, talking on her cell phone, changing lanes etc. She did even look at me. Then came a Jetta, which hit his brakes hard right next to me, reved his engine, and floored it and took off. Then came a 911 Carrera, which was driven by an man more my age. He smiled and gave me the thumbs up.

The whole time I had the cruise set on 70 in a 60 zone. I was not about to play tag on I5 with anybody, that's not me. But they all stopped to look at the marvel of the 8 going down the highway with not a spec of dirt on it, and 5 coats of NXT.
