I feel so lucky
This was probably one of the most scary things that i have ever gone through.
I was driving home Wednesday night and it was about 9 o clock. I pulled out of this back road and was on the way to my house. I was just driving along when all of a sudden two cars together got on my bumper and i was actually going the speed limit ( which was a first) i figured that they were just two guys wanting to race, so i said what the heck and went from the speed limit, which was 40 to 90... i took off and left those other cars in my dust, but they later caught up to me, when i turned down my street. they kept on my bumper and i eventually made it to my driveway. When the two cars went by me they were TWO POLICE CARS!! I almost **** myself. They could have flashed their lights and got me for going 50 over!! I had my radar detector, but for some reason they must not have had their radar on cuz otherwise i would have known it was the popo's. Why would they not pull me over?? I feel so lucky!
Also, the day before i had my car parked in front of my school. Evidently, we had some people come onto the campus and smash in windows of some vehicles and steal everything they had. My friend's huge dodge truck had it's window busted out and they tore off his dash to get his dvd player out along with all of his dvds... his truck was directly beside my 8. I don't know if i should feel lucky or mad cuz whoever did this didn't think to look in mine. At any rate i guess i feel lucky that they didn't break into mine and pop my trunk to get out my kicker subs and amp. It's been a weird week.

^I'm fairly sure police can't use radar guns when they are moving, but still, I'm sure they new you were speeding.
but on a similar note, I've been caught a few times in speed traps going about 7-8 over, and still have yet to get a ticket.
perhaps the 8 is immune.

They can check a person's speed when they are driving.
The police can also pace a car.
I had to step on it coming on to a county road the other day. Took it up to about 75 MPH speed limit is 65 MPH on that road. The car directly behind me shot forward toward me. I instinctively pulled to the lane next to me and slowed down. The officer drove next to me for about 20 seconds and then took the next left.
The way he shot forward had me thinking he might smack into the back of my car.
Hope your luck doesn't run out catman.

They can use radar while moving. The system adds or subtracts the police car's speed. There have been problems with that setup, when the radar isn't sure what it's looking at, but they do have it. Requires better training than a stationary radar setup. The problem is when a poorly trained officer sees a number pop up (or hears the beep when his pre-set threshold is exceeded), then looks around to see who it might have been.
Two police cars together...I suspect they were on their way someplace, and not interested in a traffic stop. Probably happy that you sped off, so they could pick up their speed. Maybe they had a line on the guy who had been breaking into trucks... :-)
Rule of thumb is that they'll stop and ticket you at 10 or more above the limit. Not hard and fast, and people have been ticketed at 1 over, but in general they stay busy enough with a threshold of 10 above. I remember looking into an Alabama state trooper's car and seeing the in-car radar with 65 dialed in, in an area where the highway limit was 55.

What kind of radar do you have? Something similar happened to me. It was dusk and I was driving and some one pulled out behind me and got right up on my bumper so I took off to 70(in a 55) was coming around a corner and a cop came out of nowhere and my pos detector didnt go off till I was around the corner and right in his face. He turned on his lights but after I made a left he turned them off and kept going.

From talking to my brother (a former Indiana pig) and several officers in Az, they use a 10% rule.
Say 35 mph would be 3-4 mi over in a residental area.
On a freeway 8-10 mph over the limit.
Also it depends on the time of day, current situation and how the driver reacts when being followed.
Thier favorite color is still Red... But we all know that already.

I'm friends with all the cops in my area, perks of having works at a local convenient store -- but anyways, they explained to me, that on the local 50mph road, unless it is the end of the month, or has been an extremely boring/dry week, they will not pull anyone over going less than 70mph.
However, one of them (note: he has been on the force the shortest amount of time, basically just out of rookie stage) said he would pull over anyone going 65+.

Most police cars, especially city PDs and Sheriff's offices, do not have radar. In those cases, it's usually just in the dedicated traffic cars.
Which is not to say one of them won't pull you over for stupidity in public and talk to you about it. Or perhaps even write you a ticket if he paced you.

Come by the midwest, apparently our police don't care if you go 10 over.

I had a similar experience a few months ago outside Eagle Lake, TX. It was a long straight well paved road (speed limit - 65mph) so I decided to push myself a little and got up to 116 mph. I saw a car in the distance and instinctivley hit the brakes, then scolded myself for being a ***** and throttled back to ~100. Finally I realized it was a cop and by the time he got to me I had only slowed to about 88-90. Passed him at this speed and he just kept driving, I was expecting him to just pull me over and start beating me with his nightstick, oh well.

Ny state thruway 4-5 days ago i was driving in the fast lane at about 8 pm and a bmw 3 series tries to race me. My radar detector starts freaking out at this point and i slow down to 65 (was going 70 but i didnt know how if the cop was a ***** and would pull me over going 5mph over the limit) at the point i see the cop the 3 series is going 95-100 and about 2000 feet down the road a state trooper passes me on the left shoulder going 90+ (MOTHER F*#$'r sprayed road grit all over my car and i think caused some small paint chips) and proceeds to pull the guy over..... Ahh resisting a race is smart. Local cops are near-harrasing me though because im a kid in an 8. For example in the past week ive had a cop pull an illegal u-turn to ride my bumper for miles, A cop was outside the gym i go to my car and follows me at walking pace as i gent into my car he sped off, and on mainstreet 2 times when a cop has seen me he has slown down significantly (obstructing traffic) just to stare at me while i was walking. Its getting very rediculous they just wanna pinn me for something so badly. The local police and state troopers around here get off on their power trips like nothing ive seen before. The situation with the gym and the situations walking through town have all been the same local cop.

A buddy of mine is a cop, and trust me, the fact they didn't stop you means they were either in a good mood, or were on their way to another call. I did a ride-along with him once, and some guy in a Camaro blew by him on the freeway. We pulled in behind, accelerated, and began pacing him. The guy checked his rearview, saw the squad car, and pointed towards the berm asking "should I pull over?".
My buddy did the "naughty naughty" gesture (repeatedly crossing his fingers) and let the guy go. That guy had a good day too. Grats!
