Making Purchase! Need Help!!! RX-8 R3
#26
yep, thats why I bought a rusty old wrangler. fun to drive too. you can drive over pretty much everything.
#27
Test drive miles or personal use? Aside from that, that sounds like a killer deal. Some cars on autotraders are running for 26k @ 3-4k miles, but I'm a little bit hesitant as one car was used by a sales rep as demo. The other was fully loaded test drive miles and I know how people tend to test drive. Congratulations on your purchase.

also... repairs are not cheap for this vehicle. Simple things are pretty expensive. If you are not a DIY person, you will pay up the wazoo at a dealership for things.
Need your plugs replaced? 270 to 300 dollars...Tires?? 19s are not cheap....
it is not your average car....not just anyone can work on it.
I agree on the college setting....people will ding the crap out of it and not care, your car will get beat upon by someone because they think it is fun, specially when drunk.
Gas will be a killer expense depending on the driving type (city vs hi-way) or if you keep your foot to the floor and the revs high.

If you check on the internet, 1st year depreciation is the worst, around $8,000. Then it levels off to around $2-3,000 a year which is not bad. Best price I've seen on 2011s is around $29,000. A 2010 with low miles probably in the $25-27,000 range depending on the greed of the dealer (or desire to get it out the door). Best price I've seen locally was last year when a brand new R3 went for a little less than $25,000. It was a leftover 2009. Resale on RX-8s is generally not great because there is a small audience for the car. This is a car you buy and keep for it to make sense

BTW, I would not expect to see great deals on any R3s after 2009 because Mazda cut way back on production of these cars. My local dealer had one 2010 R3 last year and he has one 2011 right now. My bet is that he won't get another

Very nice. I hope I can get as lucky.
That's understandable. I've taken the time to review some of the DIY threads, but will most likely get an experienced friend to shadow me when I attempt.
I just talked to my father awhile ago and he said he will be able to purchase me an A level Faculty parking permit, so commuting on campus for the most part shouldn't be too big of a problem for parking traffic/collisions/horseplay.
Alright, I just got off the phone with a trusted family-owned Mazda dealership and he sold his last 2010 RX8 R3 with <10 miles for around 26.2k loser deal ($1600 loss of profit). I asked him for his insight/recommendations on the purchase of a 3k-4k mileage 2010 RX8 R3 for around 26.5k as well and he assured me it was a great deal especially this time of month where Mazda's rebates/incentives are sky-high. So there you go gentlemen, on the 2010 models the best possible deal you can get is around the 26k mark.
I have also landed a deal through a mutual friend for a 2010 RX-8 GT with <200 miles for around 23k. I will be making my decision soon. An option would be to purchase this and spend the additional 3k on the R3 trim aftermarket upgrades and have an accessible moonroof
Would anyone be as kind to save me time by letting me know what trim the Recaro sports seats are?

I just bought an R3 last Sunday for $26.5k with the 3.9% Mazda was offering. I could of done better like Texas RX8 R3 but the price was reasonable enough. You should not pay no more than $27k. Now the hardest part is driving the car like an old lady for the first 1,000 miles. Can't wait to redline this puppy! So nice to get back in a rotary powered car! Sure missed my '90 FC Turbo. Like everyone in this forum, let the addiction begin...........

I landed a 3.2% APR in the middle of September on my 8 from a Hyundai dealership. Haha. The interest will be the crucial point. It can make or break a good deal, so fight hard to get it as low as possible.
I'm jealous of the deals a lot of you got. I couldn't afford more than 21k, so I settled for a Sport, but now I here Jason got an R3 for 22k! Wtf?!? Haha. No worries.
As far as the OP's questions go, I'm a college student too and the car is fine. Gas is pricey, but it's worth it. The car sounds amazing, drives amazing and has the world's smallest turning radius I swear! It's great for parking. Just make sure to go to the highest, emptiest level of the parking garage.

Hey guys I'm back. I'm getting ready to make a purchase this month while incentives are ocurring and deals are best. I wanted to know how much a car depreciates after a year.
1. Is it 15-20%?
2. Does this mean dealers are forced to take a loss anyway after it's the new year?
3. Would they go for a loser deal just to finish strong this year for a bigger bonus?
Most of the negotiations on R3 have been over the phone and I've gotten only 26.5+ttl. Other dealerships won't beat and would just match. I've clearly shown my interest and I'm getting post quote calls bc they seem desperate to move, but I feel I can do a lot better especially this time of year

Can't help you with book depreciation, but here is my recent real-world purchase and ownership experience. In August I purchased a used silver 09 GT with premium package (moonroof & Sirius) and spare tire kit. Car had just under 11,500 miles. MSRP was $32,965 and I purchased for under $19K + TTL. Interior and exterior were flawless but just picked up my first door ding last week. This is an occasional daily driver and have gotten between 14.14 (me) and 18.15 (wife) mpg over 13 fill-ups while using less than 1.5 qts oil over last 2K miles. Other than warranty issues, I'll do all other maintenance myself so I'm not too concerned about operating costs.

I got a 2008 rx-8 last month, 23k miles on it. I'm 19 and in college and all I can say is that I love my car. Other people, specially students tend to appreciate the 8 when I drive around campus and they don't mess with it because they like it hahaha, or I've just been lucky.
if you are mechanically inclined this car is very easy to work on, and there are tons of DIY guides here.
if you really have the money, and you're buying it because you ENJOY and APPRECIATE a good handling car the go for it. if you just want looks then get a mustang or something like that.
My only complain is gas consumption.... its ridiculous. But I still wouldn't change it for a crappy american car or some "green" FWD car.
on a side note: Why are you getting a R3?

well if yall want a R3--i have an 09 VR model with 9.7K miles on it for sale for $14,500.
I lucked out and got what the insurance company classified as a low flood salvage car.
Heck the water didnt even touch the seats!.
The people who had it thought there was engine damage--but there wasnt. They just didnt know how to crank a flooded (gas/oil) rotary engine. hehe.
All I have had to do to this car is to replace some of the interior wiring harness and because anytime a car runs in deep enough water for just a little (without the engine running) the throwout bearing needed to be replaced.
The car is perfect--runs strong--even has the optional spare tire package. Its a beatiful car.
Come one come all.
