Manual
I know how to drive stick, and I'm about to buy a new RX8, but my dad doesn't want me to get a manual. He knows that I know how to drive it but he still doesn't want me getting one. How can I convince him to let me buy a manual? I don't want the auto.

Yeah, that's a good one. I hardly ever use my cell phone anymore - I pretty much can't. And I can't tinker with the radio as much (although the steering wheel controls let me get around it) - so that's a good excuse as well.

LIES!! On a different note. The Auto's are MUCH more prone to "dead engines" and the like. That's a damn good reason..

Manual tranny's get better MPG, Keep you more focused on the task of driving (as oposed to cellphone/eating on the car/carressing the girlfriend...) and tend to be more durable in the long run (you tend to know they are having trouble long before any catastrophic faliure occurs as oposed to the slushboxes, which run fine until they die on you with little or no warning leaving you stranded)
However, daddy might be more worried that you'll be doing the stuff we all did when we were young and stupid, (racing evrything to include our own shadow/ attempting to drift on public roads in traffic burnouts in evry stoplight etc...)
since he's already getting you a sports car an auto might discourage you from doing too much stupidity on it (or that's what he is probably hoping) since MT's have the reputation of encouraging more spirited driving.
Present the logical arguments to him and he might budge, but if he is the one ultimately making the purchase, you're at his mercy... whatever you do maintain a composed and mature attitude while talking to him.

Agreed with the others...just tell him of fact that the engine seems to have a few more problems in the auto...and that the auto and manual DO NOT have the same engine in them. Their getting slightly closer and closer though...so that excuse might not last much longer.
On the other hand, if dad buys it for you, just be happy regaurdless of transmission. Most of us were handed down a 10-15 year old beater.
just more $0.02

I already told him about the engine. I'll also tell him how it'll focus me on driving more. Any scientific studies?

you can start a manual if your battery dies...you can control the car better if it starts slipping because you can give it more power or less power depending on the situation, downgearing can help you brake faster
