Manual

What is it that gets some of you so damned wound up when a kid's dad buys him a car? He's posted respectfully and is interested in learning something, and that's more than can be said for a number of posters who did buy their own ride.

Just explain to him that the manual rx8 is a much better deal and has WAY better resale (still not saying much). Who the hell buys a used auto rx8? The manual rx8 is the exact same price as the auto rx8 but includes the automatics $3,000 sport package for free.

Eh, get used to it - lol It's the same thing on every car forum. Lots of people just jealous that they didn't get the silver spoon as a kid and they feel a bit cheated.

Manual takes infinitely more concentration than driving auto. I've done more stupid things in my '99 Altima automatic than I have in my RX-8 6-speed. In fact when I'm in the RX-8 I'm a totally different driver; I'm focused, aware, courteous, I don't tailgate, and I don't drive like a maniac. I think it's all because in a automatic I get bored out of my mind and have to amuse myself by being an idiot. In the manual I get enough satisfaction from just shifting that I'm never bored.

At least I'm not whining because I'm not being bought the "appropriate" vehicle when I should darned well be buying it myself.
If someone pitches a fit because a gift is not exactly what they wanted then they certainly don't deserve to be receiving it, especially when it is a very expensive gift!

just because your dad gets you a car does not mean you should just be happy with it. Manual versus automatic is a big deal, and its close in price. Personally, if my dad is spending 25000 $$ on something then I would want the right thing, not something in second place. I know some of you are getting upset that parents buy cars, but hey, maybe he earned it. And wouldn't you want to give everything to your kids if you had the opportunity? Cut him some slack. His dad is getting him a car, and he wants to get the right one. An auto rx8? thats a waste of that much money and he is asking how he can prevent that

Gotdilbert - I think you've got the info you need in the responses. Also, a quick intro to the varied personalities here on the 8 club. yay. Good luck.

^^^ Excellent point. The problem your dad has probably has nothing to do w/auto vs. MT. More of a power & driving skill/experience/maturity issue. Talk to him, and find out if this is the case. If it comes down to it, you're probably better off w/a less powerful car that might be more fun. The 8 in AT is rough. If you're willing to hear his concerns, and show the maturity to say "let's look at other things, b/c this car in AT is not a good choice for these reasons . . ." you'll probably find him much more receptive.
Either way, don't prove the cranky & envious users here right by throwing a tantrum at Dad. More importantly, don't prove them right by getting the 8 and wrecking it.

Seems to me he's being pretty adult like by seeking out resources with which he can talk to his father about the pros and cons of owning a manual over an automatic.

Hey BlueEyes, maybe you can help me out in the lounge... I'm trying to get a red 911 and my unreasonable father wants to buy me a black one! It's complete BS! Can you give me some good advice on how I can get a red one? You're doing such a good job helping this schmuck out, maybe you can help me as well.

If your dad will not give you a manual rx-8, why not suggest a compromise and get a manual MX-5 Miata? It would be tons more fun than an auto RX-8, along with a cheaper price, great gearbox, and greater perception of safety from your father's point of view. Since you just broke up with your gf, the two seats and convertible top will suit you just swell.

Thanks notears, my dad told me not to get a red, as it would attract the attention of the police, and the black one wouldn't stand out as much. But since I wanted the black anyways thats not an issue.
The price isn't the issue, I have to prove to him that manual is not distracting and I can be just as safe if not safer with it. I don't want the slushbox, especially since he was FINE with an RX8, just auto, so I don't see why its not okay to get the manual instead.
Also, my dad said he doesn't want me having ANY manuals, also, he is against cars that will classify as sports cars, hence the RX8 and its four doors.
Also, thank you all for your mature responses (most of you anyways), I am still trying to convince him and am pointing out many well thought out ideas that you guys have given me, for example:
BlueEyes, for his support and pointing out that I will be more focused. (Im a guy and dont' put on makeup though :P)
Gomoses, for pointing out his own experience.
shakRpahX8, for rewording what it is that im trying to explain to my dad.
AdRoCK3217, for pointing out the mechanical issues with the auto.
MazdaTed, for his humorous and interesting comment about the drink.
WhiteDealershipRice, for a humorous and clearing up a wide assortment of issues.
Stavesacre21, for practical knowledge and more mechanical issues.
Phantom 4 Door, for alot of useful contributions. And wording very nicely what im feeling (about how if im getting the auto I might as well get the manual)
Razz1, for a useful fact. But where I live we do not have traffic conditions like that.
Xantium, for the financial views.
BlueSky, for something that I showed my dad as evidence.
dmc27, for a well worded and mature response.
Shinka-Dono, for presenting things from my dads point of view.
