Anyways I only thanked the ones that actually said something intelligent and contributed. I'd like to think that I was mature but I know I have a ways to go, and since I'm going to college soon I want a manual car also, so that kids don't borrow my car (I can say yes if they don't know how to drive stick, if they do, then I'll just have to say no).

Any other views that would support the automatic? Also, the RX8 is not the only car im looking at. He's saying if im not satisfied with the auto I should keep the car I have, and save the rest of the money for getting a car after I finish college.

Cosidering your post about college - you probably are better off not getting the 8 now, anyway. You will (trust me) NEVER want to let others drive it, which will likely increase the "envy" factor that will already exist. With a campus full of people that know which car is yours, and where it is, drunk and pissed off at their life (see posts below - and these are the non-teen "adults"), or pissed off at you . . .

OK, try this:

The manual does require more concentration BUT it is concentration placed where it should be; driving the car! Manual drivers tend to be less focused on cell phones, sandwiches and goddamned bottled water/juice/soda than drivers of automatics. So long as you’re not learning for the first time, you’ll be in better shape with a manual. Many people say that because of the control you have manuals develop better driving practices.

This is important because when drivers have to multitask it is those tasks that take them away from the task of driving the car that matter most, not the transmission type.

Safety: This also does not depend upon the transmission type nearly as much as the kind of vehicle. A Volvo is a safe car independent of its transmission type (fewest fatal crashes for a car. Right in there with SUVs). This then comes down to a trust issue and has nothing to do with the transmission. You can kill yourself or others driving like a maniac in anything. (RX-8 has 4 star crash rating for driver, 5 star for passenger). 2 star is a death trap, 3 star is better but not good enough, 4 star is passable (i.e. you’ll live …probably).

Just get the manual. Its doesn’t distract you, it has nothing to do with safety ratings, the engine will last longer, better gas mileage (maybe not for the 8 but say that anyway because its true in general), longer transmission life, everyone on rx8club.com wants you to get one and goddamn it its just cooler.

Does your dad have any reason to think you will not drive responsibly in this car? That may require a different argument.

I still think it's a strange opinion - especially for someone who has experience w/MT. I can't drive an AT w/o reaching for the clutch at least twice in any trip, and generally feel like I have less control of the car. But without the driving experience, you really can't use that arguement. I stand by my initial thoughts:

-The problem your dad has probably has nothing to do w/auto vs. MT. More of a power & driving skill/experience/maturity issue. Talk to him, and find out if this is the case.-

 

Have him with you on a test drive of both the Manual and the auto. Show him how you will be driving both cars so that he can see that you can actually Drive a MT.

Offer to take a safety drivers course and invite him to come see.

Also offer to pay for Inshurance yourself and registration. That wont set you back SOOOO much and will present to him a very good point in your intention to driving safely.

If you wreck you have to pay for the ishurance premiums going UP not him.

Be firm on your point but not overly insistent, that might be received as nagging and that wont assure you'r dad of you'r maturity.

Also, What car are you currently driving? Have you wrecked it before? If you have a history of irresponsible driving I'd say there isn't much you can do to make your dad think other wise. If you don't have speeding tickets, and haven't crashed before, you might bring that up as an extremly strong point in your case.

dmc, it depends on the attitude of the college you go to. I go to a UC which is primarily a commuter school so almost everyone has cars and alot of them have pretty decent ones. There is a general level of respect for people's personal property a my school. I've left my cell-phone, my wallet, my laptop, and my keys lying around unattended for sometimes up to 30mins without anything being touched or stolen. The only thing have have had stolen was my bike, from the front of my dorm (when i was a freshman) because it wasn't chained properly. But this was during finals week when the bike snatchers are on the prowl.

 

I'm driving an RX300 with no issues. I dislike big cars which is why I want an RX8.

Wow, you do have money!!

Promise and take it, not only is it A LOT of fun, it works. I took one together with a Race car driving school and it's amazing how much you learn, and get to respect the car. Once you have felt what it's like to spin at 60 mph on a controled track you make shure it doesent happen on a public road with other cars, barriers, pedestrians around. You also learn to feel your car's limit so when you react in an emergency situation, you don't end up making it worst.

I understand what you mean by not liking big cars, I'm the same way I had a Grand Vitara (which was my wifes but we ended up buying another car for her, long story) I hated the hell out of that thing.

Anyway doesen't matter which you get, AT, MT, keep the RX, ect. Make the effort worth it for your parents. Someone already said, dont wreck it; Im saying, DO NOT **** ARROUND in college. They are giving you all of this (Im assuming they are paying for college also) so you can have every advantage, oportunity available to you. It is way too easy to go to college, get mediocre grades, and make yourself a mediocre citizen. You have every advantage available to you so make them proud.
