Mazda Remanufacturing update...

So we have been running since March, we have rebuilt roughly 300 motors now, the first month we literally built a entire assembly line and set up the plant. We have only shipped I believe 4 motors (1 MT, 3 AT) out to see how the first ones go. We wont ship anymore until Williams Tech finishes off there inventory. Our plant recently purchased a used 2004 RX8(AT) and have removed the motor out of it and are in the middle of installing one of our motors for mileage testing on it. We also recieved a 2009 Friday that we will remove the brand new 0 mile motor out of it and place a rebuilt MT motor in it for the same mileage test. Why they are using a 09, I dont know but its also a mileage test, we will have to change out the harness of course with the changes made.

If they allow me to take them home like before I will try to hit a few local meets in them, the boss says he wants to pile the miles on them and if the motor is in the AT I will hopefully take it on vacation in september for the first 800 or so miles that I am driving. We will be running compression tests every few thousand miles and other tests to keep an eye on the motors. BTW occasionally we oddly get a higher then spec motor after the builds that baffled the japan builders/engineers, I imagine it comes down to used parts combined with new parts but a few of you who recieve rebuilds from us down the road might get lucky and have a little bit extra pull out of your motor

Hey man, sup

Damn, I wish I can have a 0 mile motor to play with. Plus I wish I have access like you guys so I can do a swap with easy from our "older" version to the "newer" motor (with the 3rd injection port, lol)

Thx for letting us know !

Oh I wonder can we buy the Reman directly from you guys. skip the middle man (Mazda and greedy dealerships)

I do see all the paper work and I stamp every single motor as it goes out, I can make notes of which motors have the higher compression #'s beyond the ones we have built and post them but for now we went back to AT motors for now, we only did 100 MT's.

As of now I am doing recieving(parts/motors) and I am considered the "floater". They trained me at all positions, I jump in if someone is gone or needs help and I handle checking in parts/motors when I am free and everyone is at work. I spent Friday doing what I feared, disassembly, I am a clean pretty boy and prefer to build over tear down but I actually enjoyed it and shockingly I managed to meet there #'s with both guys out sick and tore down 6 motors during my shift after a brief re-training session. I haven't torn down the motor since my first few weeks there but it was actually fun and it let me see the before side of things for once, I actually prefer that over the dyno room now.

Sorry dealerships are the only way to get one. Also the 09 has no MOP(metering oil pump), supposedly the new electronic system is a solution to the cold starting issue. We had a brief tech run down a few weeks ago.

BTW small note, if your a tech in the Virginia area and are sent to technical training in colonial heights,va then you will get a tour of the assembly line on your visit but no its not open to the public due to safety/insurance reasons. I was suprised the opened it up for the techs with how much they were telling us about mazda trying to be secretive about the motors but youtube exposes almost everything anyways.

so you are saying that a 04 to 08 motor will bolt right up to a 09?

interesting to know.. well very interesting to know..

does the wiring harness work.

i would think that some issues with the 3rd oil injector would be a problem.

but if it was running a 04 to 08 ecu how would it know.

fun stuff.

beers

Yeah we will have issues with the harness but we have the tools/equipment to handle that, it should bolt right up, the oil pan and the front cover on the block are the only design changes outside of the injectors that I saw when they showed us a 09 engine they shipped in.

If you saw our dyno setups you would understand why it is a breeze, there are a few of us that can be handed a harness and know where every wire goes by now. When you have to disassemble/build 10-15 a day you begin to have dreams about the motor at night and get to know it a little too well.

The implications are interesting. Wonder what my dealership is going to tell me when I take my 04 AT in for its 15k checkup.

Well if you have a AT and your in either las vegas, texas or arizona then you might have one. Not sure where they sent our lone MT though, easiest way to see is the engine stamp ours will read....

Mazda Remanufacturing
N3H2-VO 0810(build date)
MR 08-0001

Stamp goes on the front housing cover to the right of the water pump on the top.
I stamped/glued all those on at the end of each day, tried to make them all straight and pretty looking even though the engine cover covers them up.

I'm assuming, possibly incorrectly, that these engines are intended for the perceived blanket Mazda approved engine swaps I keep reading about here.

If the threads here were statistically correct (which isn't the case for most online communities) everyone who visits their Mazda dealership now-a-days gets a new engine.

/edit

Just did some searching... hopefully, I'm not rehashing an old argument. I think it's great that Mazda is supporting the NA market with the Virginia plant.

If my engine ever does require a swap, it'd be pretty cool if it came directly from someone I've chatted with online lol.

Sleepy, on behalf of myself, although I'm sure a lot of people feel this way, thanks for taking the time out of your day to post and give us amazing information we would never know if it weren't for you.

Cheers.

Poor Roger, his rebuilt motor caught on fire and melted his car to the ground.

Sleepy,

What did they change on these new latest replacement motors? My tech told me it was something about a new coating (teflon) and something else. He said I was getting the "latest and greatest" motor, when he installed mine 3 weeks ago.

You didn't get one of ours, Williams tech(aka cat reman) has to finish off there inventory before ours will leave, no idea when that will be. Chances are the tech from your dealership got a tour though since were in his region.

The rotors them selfs have a anti carbon(teflon) paint sprayed on the 3 sides. Currently all of the 300 motors we have done are using brand new rotors in them. We have a pile of used rotors, they are still building our paint booth to reuse the good rotors and to apply the coat on them, hopefully if I keep bugging them I want to take a couple rotors home and throw them in the garage and do a little rotary shelf or something next to my Z shelf.

The only difference in the motors really they build and we build is that they were having quality issues and I am not aware if they tested the motors prior to shipping them. They sent us there builders from japan to train us for 3 months to get things right and we are over looked by MNOA now. If a motor has a odd noise the plant manager(also from Mazda japan) comes out with a stethoscope and listens prior to giving it a ok or not.

Just so you guys know williams tech motors are not all bad, they have just had some issues with there builds to the point that mazda wanted to do them thereselves. Sometimes you get a good one from them, I dont want to make them sound bad, I have recieved a few of there motors and sometimes they have higher mileage on them. Honestly we dont know how good our motors are yet, hopefully in the next few week when we get our rx8 install done we can find out though.

We have 1 ase certified. They didn't want anyone with background on rebuilding the motors though. They said if they brought in those people they would try to short cut and do things there way. They wanted people who had a little experience with tools and were trainable so the japan builders can train them there way. If you did something as simple as bolting on the oil pump prior to the front stationary gear(I did that), which honestly makes no deference, the japan builder would stop you and make you start over in training. Its not like we are repairing anything anyways, just building a motor on a line. I was hired for my parts background to assist in shipping/recieving but it somehow turned into me learning every single position so I can fill in when I am needed but still check engines in and prep them for shipping/also check in all the parts.....a lot of work for me but it keeps me busy and I love to be the only one there that can actually do it all.
