I highly doubt that it will be as fast as an FD. That was an all-out, no compromises sports car. The RX-8 isn't. There's more to speed than horsepower and weight, which are similar in both cars. I don't think that there's any question that the RX-8 will be slower around a track, due to suspension tuning, tires, etc. In a straight line, the FD was usually around 5.0 or quicker to 60 mph, and the RX-8 is estimated at 6.0.

If you think about it, the FD was designed to be a pure sports car, and cost far more money than anyone expects the RX-8 to cost. The RX-8 is much cheaper, seats 4 people, and is much closer to a mass-market product. I expect the RX-8 will have better performance than anything else close to it in price, but will fall well short of the mark the RX-7 set.

It depends on the weight. If the RX-8 ends up being close to the RX-7's 2850 lb curb weight, then straight line performance should be close, with an edge to the RX-7. The RX-7 has more torque, so it will be easier to launch.

Like Rich said, the RX-8 is more of a mainstream sports car than the "pure" sports car that the RX-7 was. The RX-8 will be ~10" longer in wheelbase, so don't expect the agility of an RX-7. I still think it should handle exceptionally well, though.

The 8 could have performace very close to the last 7, considering..

If two vehicles had the same weight, the other main factors determining acceleration would be torque curve and gearing.

Noones seen what the torque curve of the new motor looks like yet, but with the 6 speed trans it may be able to put down near peak HP for as wide a range as the TT 7 did, or atleast comparable.

For top speed, weight is less inportant, gearing and drag more important. Here it should be very close also.

And around a track, I've heard the 8 has a better suspension then the 7 did, and stiffer chassis. I bet it's close here too, assuming power/weight is close.

I'm betting it won't take much aftermartet work to make the 8 outperform a stock 7.

Good points, R.Cade, but I still don't think the RX-8 will be able to compete with the RX-7, particularly in handling. The typical RX-7 buyer was willing to put up with a MUCH harsher ride than I expect the typical RX-8 would. Just take a look at the threads on this board; people want a wagon, subs, satellite radio, heated seats, integrated garage door opener, etc. I have nothing against any of those things, but I think they demonstrate what many people are expecting from this car, and it's not no-compromises performance. They will be willing to put up with reduced performance for a cushier ride. It's not going to ride like a Caddy or Lexus, but it's not going ride like an 3rd gen. RX-7. Even if the suspension is "better" and the chassis stiffer, I suspect the tuning will leave plenty of room for tuners.

I do agree that it won't take much aftermarket work to outperform a stock RX-7.

Thumbs up Congratulations Styjan

That is a beautiful car! You can't show me another 9 year old car that looks that good. I guess it's timeless. Pretty intimidating in that black too. I'm guessing a lot of folks will be acting like they don't see you next to them at the red light. They'll have to fake like they are on their phones or messing with their radio or something. The don't want none of that. :D
Good job!

Thumbs up

ohhhh... so unbelievably sexy... and the right colour!!! (7)

damned right that the car is timeless!! it'll go down in history as the MOST UNDERRATED sports car of the 1990's... and the simply the sexiest thing out of Japan the world had ever seen. It'll be one of those cars that kids (like me, 19) will be talking about in 30 years when we're the fogies on TV being nostalgic about "old klunkers" like the fellas on "My Classic Car" do today...
man!! AND AN R1 !!! oh jeez... envy cannot describe... but just wicked Styjan... if it coulda been anyone, had to be you!! :D
