mazda rx8 have good take off speed and are they fast?

I am looking foward to buying a 04-07 mazda rx8 (used) and I was wondering for you guys that have mazda rx8's, are they fast? Torque wise cause they only have 159 torque, I know they have the same top speed as a g35 amd a 350z at 155 mph but torque is kinda low compared to other cars. I know it is a only a 1.3 liter engine, rotary and 2-3 cylinder but I just want to know if they have good acceleration. I am lloking for STOCK mazda rx8 btw. Easy scale between 1-10. 1 lowest and 10 highest.
Thank you for the help guys

The RX8 isn't the car you want to drag race with. In my opinion it is very quick, but then again my old car was pretty slow. If your car is in good running condition it will accelerate quickly. The 0-60 mph is 6.3 seconds. This car is very enjoyable to drive even though it is not the fastest out there. It's not built to smoke tires and be fast in a straight line, its purpose is to be driven on twisty roads or on a track. The power is at the top end, so you need to be in high rpm in order to go anywhere. I suggest you do a little more research on the car before deciding to buy one. Rx8's require a little more care than other cars, but it will reward you if you enjoy driving. Search this forum for more information and RUN before you get flamed for starting this thread.

I've seen this a lot more often recently and it's really bothering me... why do people care about top speed? Most cars wont hit top speed at a track (drag or road course... definitely not auto x) and even in street races (which are illegal and not condoned on this forum) you'll cut out before top speed. There's only a few cars where I'd consider top speed worth talking about and even then... it's kind of just bragging rights and not really something that matters.

Edit: Forgot to mention... get a civic. RX-8's are slow. No one here really likes the 8 because of how slow it is. Most people bought it and feel stuck with it and wish they could get something else with a bigger, piston engine.

All I can say is that the 8 has enough speed for me, and for my skill level. And I'm sure it's plenty for many others as well, but you just need to know how to drive the 8 in order to get the full benefit of what it's really about.

I'm sure many others have mentioned this before, but if power & torque is something you crave after, then this car may not keep you satisfied for the long run. Top speed runs is definitely NOT what this car is about.

To me, this car is meant for the individual who falls in love with how unique it feels and drives.

Sorry, I kind of got carried away. To answer your question, the RX-8 has enough speed only if you're willing (and happy) to rev. And you really, really have to rev! I won't complain if it had more juice, but overall, I'm satisfied with how it pulls.

Just my two cents.

Yea its not a slow car by any means to me, faster than my previous one. Anything above 4k rpm's is decent and gets better as it goes up.

I'm a big fan of v8s and fast straight line cars but I still really enjoy this car, it gives you another kind of fun that others already mentioned.

The speed of the car is really seen when you drive it at high speeds. The power is there and acceleration may not be the world's fastest but you can pass other cars very easily once you really start moving. Now if it was a 232-hp V4 or V6 then yeah it would not be as quick but the RX-8 is using a rotary engine and power is a lot more responsive than a piston-based engine at high speeds. It's not a car, it's a RX-8. :P

Good point. In fact, I'd wager that very few cars purchased – of any brand – ever even come close to reaching their top speed during the life of the car.

As everyone has said, the 8 is not a competitive stoplight-to-stoplight, straight line drag car; many family cars and econoboxes are faster. But people who buy the 8 aren't into that. Driven like it oughta be (if you want to go fast) — and that means keeping the revs up between 5 and 8K — the car is very quick and light on its feet. It'll outhandle most any other car out there, so in the real world (i.e. not the flat and straight Midwest), where roads twist, turn, rise and dive, you'll find the 8 to be faster than just a handful of cars. But you do have to work that stick. RX-8 owners like to do that. It's what we call "driving".

FWIW, when the 8 came out Car and Driver managed a 0-60 time of 5.9 seconds.

If it were any faster, I fear I'd have killed myself in it long ago.

7/10. If you can't get 7/10 you aren't flooring the gas. Slight hesitation in the beginning lasts only a moment, then the rpms climb and you take off fast.

If you're a true driver, then get the RX-8. If you care about beating a 300hp car from a roll then don't bother...

I understand top speed cause I live in wi. Figure if I put acceleration, people will give me more out of it. Thanks for your opinion.

read some road tests on the RX-8 and you will get all of teh performance numbers you require. i've seen magazine 0-60 results form 5.6-5.9 seconds and top speed at 148mph.. the RX-8 is about more than speed alone, its about a well balanced, excellent handling touring machine that will satisfy a true enthusiest.

This car isnt by any means slow. And personally the way it handles doesnt bother me one bit that it has such low torque, it kind of makes up for it. You really cant have it all, speed, torque, looks, etc. This car has a bit of everything and thats what i like about it. Go read a thread called "the little things". You will never find a car that has so many "little things" that makes it so unique. The suicide doors, the 9000 rpm redline, the handling, the sexy fenders, i can go on and on.

Point is this car is no beast but its not a corolla either. Go test drive one and see how you like it.

It's as fast as you could ever want to have on the street, if driven right. Just because other cars are overpowered does not lessen the appeal of the 8.

It's a driver's car, not a muscle car. It is agile, nimble, and balanced, while seating four. If that's not what you're looking for, look elsewhere.

dont forget to replace the head gaskets for this 2 cylinder engine. Also make sure you check the blinker fluid and the flux capacitor. Rotaries have a lot of misfire problems at 6-7K RPM when the flux capacitor starts to go bad. About 30K miles you should get a new one.
