Mazda is sure doing a good job of making the RX-8 feel cheap!

How are they going to keep from discounting the cars if they are not selling enough of them? You can't have it both ways as long as you are buying a mass production vehicle. Maybe you need to be looking at a Lamborghini.

I don't think he's taken economics yet...supply/demand and the concept of a company trying to make a profit profit is not something he understands yet...don't introduce these things to the argument you'll just confuse him more and risk permanent damage to his brain...

Honestly though - People that purchase a car for "status", be it perceived or actual, will never be a true car enthusiast. I've had plenty of vehicles that have been mass-produced for my region at any given time, along with some that I considered less common. They were all purchased for ME, not for society at large.
ex :
'75 Chevy Nova - A fixer upper. Hardley a status symbol, but a good "old car"
'95 Chevy 1500 WT - Duh! Just a POS work truck
'99 Chevy S10 PK - Only a commuter PK, and lots of them on the road.
'01 Chevy Silverado PK - Fun for work and occasional off-roading.
'03 Mitsu Eclipse - Stylish to me. Lack of power. Who cares what others thought.
'02 Chevy Z06 - Raw TQ&HP, Sports/Luxury Mix, Tech Advancements. FUN.
'05 Saturn ION3 - A grocery getter. Dent resistant Panels a big +
'05 Ford Explorer EB - Mix of Safety & Cargo Capacity (which IS utilized).
Many of the above vehicles can be located within a 5 second glance down the street. Others, maybe once a month, if that. I did not buy any of my cars/trucks to be "seen" in. I bought them to serve my purpose for that particular point in my life, and what I felt would suit me. I don't give a rats furry a** whether everyone owns what I'm driving, or if I have a one-of-a-kind kit car.
To the OP : If "status" and rarity are that important to you, than you need to re-evaluate your needs & wants. As far as the Vette.....It is not even close to the same class/category as an 8. That should be obvious to anyone. A Vette is raw power that has been refined into a street-able sports car. An 8 is a car built for exciting touring with the capabilities to push its own limits.
(Oh : and trust me...the Vette will NOT be more unique than an 8. Vettes have been around a hell of a lot longer than an 8, and it reflects on the roadway. The majority of all cars, including the 8, will eventually become 'common'.)
Okay. Rant over. I just hate prople that think a car, truck, suv, etc. actually 'make' the person. This appears to be the case imo.

Do you ever see other car companies slash the prices on their flagship cars?(ex. corvette) Even if the corvette is year 2000 it will always have a prestige value because GM marketed the car right. So stop being so god damn defensive over the rx-8. I chpose the corvette because it has the most slickest look, POWER, TORQUE, and convertible. Its also a major head-turner and btw I think the best compliment I got from a guy for my RX-8 was....
"Is that the new S2000?"
"Is that the new S2000?"
Rather then biasly mock your argument like everyone else, I'll give a real response. I admit, it bothers me a little bit to see the RX8 resorted to selling like it is. For a flagship, this is certainly not normal. However, this was unavoidable, as the market is still not catching on to the RX8. Mazda's goal is to put as many RX8s on road as possible. Mazda had the option to limit the amount each year, but this is their attempt to bring back the rotary, so they had to go all out, even if it meant hugely discounting their flagship, which no other car company does. For those who bought this car thinking they were getting a limited rare car, you have been sadly mistaken. It's not rare, and the only way it will be rare is if it fails. Mazda wants this car to be everywhere, and by discounting the car greatly, that is really the only way to do it, until the market gets comfortable with a rotary.
