Mazdaspeed3...a sports car?????

MS3 is quicker then the 8...but i'd in NO WAY call it a sports car. Somewhere in today's marketplace there has been widespread confusion as to the differentiation between the a "sporty car" and a "sports car". Car's can be sporty and still be FAR from a sports car...
...take the grocery-getter Speed3. Fun little car, but if you lined it up with other actual sports cars, it would fade in comparison.
In this day in age, just about any car out there offers a "performance" (AKA higher HP) version. If HP defined a car as sporty, we'd have beetles and dodge shadows at the racetrack

ask him why he didn't get an M3 or AMG or S4 and "settled" for a MS3... those cars are so much better and faster than his MS3.
funny how some ppl have to make themselves feel better by putting other ppl down or showing off.
fail!

At work, a buddy of mine has a Cobalt SS (supercharged one, not the new turbo one) and has done plenty of work to it. Not a day goes by when he doesn't talk **** about my RX-8. I laugh at him, cause I know when its time to go home, hes getting in his "high performance low end chevy model car" and I'm getting into my car which was designed from the get go to be a sports car. His car is an economy car with a supercharger slapped on, and GM saying "hey this car is a sports car too now! see how much money we can make!"
greatest irony is, GM is getting alot of arguements to get the boot off the DOW JONES industrial average.
Honestly, looking at all the crap the guys at work give me for owning a 'slow' sports car, I think the day I pulled up in that bad boy and said, "look at my new car," some part of them died inside them cause they were so jealous.

Seriously. A sports car is something designed from the BOTTOM UP with performance in mind. Mazda does not call the MS3 a sports car, because of it's dumbed down cousin, the Mazda3, nor does dumping a LS7 into a LeSabre make a sports car.
Fast does not make a sports car. Makes it a "sporty" car though, which calling a sports car is like calling the RX-8 a supercar in the bloodlines of Lamborghini and Ferrari.
A good yardstick I use for sports car or not: Take the car straight from the dealership to the track. If it gives you orgasmic driving pleasure while facing little issues tackling the track (brake fade, overheating, etc.), it's a sports car.
Now go take your V8 LeSabre to the track and see what happens.

Very different machines right there..
A rx8 Is a sports car its a unique one and different but it is a sports car..
a honda civic mugen SI is a sporty car..

Its a turblown-econo-ricer-box...
And yes...in stock form vs. a stock RX8 it will pwn you...
Now a NA modded (MM CobbAP) 8 will out punk it until you have to shift into 4th...but thats about gearing...
Add the BHR FI kit...and its no longer a contest...you can laugh over and over and over...and over...

no one gives a crap about Mazdaspeed3. Its a nice car to own, but its just factory turboed with MS shocks & springs. thats all
snap a turbo on ur 8, make it even, and the MS3 will be like *wtf*.

LOL! Before I bought my used 8 I took it to a nearby Mazda dealership to have it inspected. The service manager typed into the inspection report: "Mazda certified 4-door family sedan." Didn't fool my wife, but I do have my brother in law believing that the freestyle doors are a specially designed family safety feature to prevent kids from exiting the back seat without an adult opening their larger door and exiting first.

I used to own an RX8 and after it got totalled about back in October/06, I decided to get me the MS3. Pretty much you can't compare them... The RX8 is a sweeet looking car, it handles great, great engine and it's truly a sports car... more fun to drive and it's RWD!!!.... but gas mileage SUCKS!!!(I was getting 18mpg driving it like a grandma)
Now the MS3 has brute power, it's amazing how hard it pulls and the RX8 in no way is in the same league as the MS3 power wise. You are in 4th gear at 3K RPM and you push the throttle so hard you are in for a nice surprise... It's a sleeper, great for kids (I have 2 small kids), great engine as well and it gives me about 24 MPG with the AC ON, and driving it hard once a day... On the highway I can get as high as 29 MPG "playing a bit".
Bottom line, it's a good compromise between a sports car and a sporty car. It handles amazing for being FWD and I can actually hold stuff on my Home Depot purchases
Power wise, quickness and reliablity... the MS3 will own the RX8
Looks, Handling and beautiful engine... RX8 hands down.
My 2 cents,
Carlos

I don't get the point of trying to label something a sports car. My best friend drives a lightly modded evo. It handles as well as my car, without FI it'll torch my 8 in a line, it gets roughly the same mpg, braking performance is similar. So.....? I should think the point of a "sports" car is to excell at driving and driving sports. Would that not make his turbo-econobox more of a sports car? Do you want people who drive other sports cars walking up to your 8 and saying it's not a sports car because it has 4 doors? Does telling yourself you drive a sports car help you sleep at night? What if the rx-8 was classified as a school bus but still looked and performed the same? Would that change things?
The labeling of a car as a sports car is weak. Every car is different and performance oriented to a different degree. It's the results of the design that should be the determining factor of how "sports car" a car is and not just personal bias. A 2004 AT Rx-8 dynoes how much at the wheels? Is that still a sports car? How about a 2nd gen Eclipse GS or a base model 3000 gt? I find late 80s and early 90s Mustangs ugly as hell - are they sports cars? What about if they aren't 5.0s but 4 cyl - slow and ugly - still sports car? A civic del sol or a prelude?
Really, if you want to trash talk someone's ride, at least stick to the facts and not just label bashing. I've been to the track and seen 12 second PT Cruisers that would blow my 8's doors off and 12 second pickup trucks. If anyone tried to tell me something I drove was a lesser vehicle because it wasn't a "sports car," I'd probably consider that person an idiot especially if they said their 15 second gas guzzler was a sports car.

They're just fluid categories that do have some meaning for people to discuss rather than argue. Sports cars are light-weight, minimalist cars that emphasize handling. Muscle cars emphasize straight-line speed, unfortunately at the expense of handling. Supercars try to combine great handling with great acceleration and luxury. Every car is a compromise of some sort. The RX-8 is not a pure sports car but it comes pretty close for a true 4-seater with a very low price.

Track ****** I know...
STi has blown its engine once, and had its turbo replaced...
MS6 blown turbos so often I lost count how many times its been replaced and smoking exhaust is now considered normal...
This all within 1 year of track the "turblown-econo-boxen"...
Funny how the M3's and Vettes and Porches are able to go on and on and on as long as you maintain them...
Also funny how you have to buy camber kits and all sorts of other mods that most "true" sports cars come with...
No...no differences between a sedan with a snail and a car designed from the ground up for track use...haa haa
