Is it me or do the rear taillight look like they came off a 92 civic. When I get the car these have got to go. Does anybody have pics of aftermarket ones. Maybe smoked?

There are no aftermarket tail lamps for the RX8 at this time. Some people have painted/tinted them red or black (smoked look) with success. Try a search on 'tail lamps' to find threads with pics.....some like the look and some don't.

there is a lot of "bling" in our tail lights yes, I like them though more for the fact though for the HUGE circular red brake light area.... at night it reminds me of some type of exotic car, like a ferrari or something.

I like the taillights. But you can smoke them if you want. I always wanted to red mine out but I am happy for now.

Wow, I too like the tailights, looks like you might be in the minority.

I like the fact that when you brake you get the big circular area to light up and the two small areas on the sides, from a distance it looks like you have 2 pair of tailights.

To me, the tailights look quite original, although maybe a bit to busy for some people.

Not as bad as the Evo VIII stock tails but they're borderline rice.

I like them too.
If I could figure out how to get them apart, I'd remove the red lens and use a stealth red bulb...

that pretty much sums it up for me as well. i personally can't wait for the altezza tail light fad to be over with. if there were decent looking/quality aftermarket lights out, i might think about changing them, but since there aren't, and i don't usually have to look at them, they are fine.

…busier than a bishop's hat".

Actually I've grown to like 'em, too. In terms of pure design, I think they're really overdone. Way over the top. Yet now, having the car a couple of months, I think they somehow "go" with the rest of the admittedly odd (in a good way) looking car. I mean, to me, the whole car is rather like something out of a Japanese animé cartoon. Something fun, that you can't take too seriously. The taillights remind me a little of some of the ones you see on those classic American cars of the '50's—totally ridiculous, but somehow kinda cool—a cross between animé and "The Jetsons". So no, I don't think you'll ever see them in the Museum of Modern Art (like the original Miata tailights!), but hey—they're fun.

I think it is you, my friend... Have you looked at the factory tail lights of a '92 Civic lately? Whatever it is you're smoking, please share... <LOL> (j/k)

Well, I also love the looks of the tail lights on the 8. They're one-of-a-kind cool, but also extremely sporty & masculine. In daylight, they might come across overdone. But, when you look at them at night, they are so freaking awesome. Which reminds me, I need to take some night pictures one of these days when I get a chance.

I think their hideously over-designed for such an elegantly refined shape like the RX-8. I will, however wait to see what they'll look like with Mazdaspeed pieces and a cool CF lip spoiler before I find a way to alter/replace them. I can see where they were going with the idea, and how they wanted the rears to mimic the front (clear lens, circular shape underneath), but it just looks strange on the back of a stock RX-8.

that's why rx-8s should be modded.

The entire RX-8 is "hideously over-designed", I like the looks, but it's a bit garish as a whole. The two words elegant and refined should never be used to describe the RX-8s design IMO.

The RX8's design is the oppisite of elegant and refined...it's designers would tell you the same thing.
