Fellow RX-8 owners:

Take a close look at the shape of the RX-8 tail light lens. Notice how the trailing edge of the tailights kicks out away from the body... like a spioiler.

This may have an aero benefit to clean up the air flow at the rear of the car.

More auto designs are using tiny spoiler shapes on the side of taillights to improve hi-speed aero...like the new Lexus IS and GS and the BMW 6-series.

If you still don't see it tilt your head 90 deg. while looking at the lens.

The small details. Just another reason I love this car.

The shape of any part of the car body from ouside mirrors to yes- even taillights can be shaped to help manage airflow around the car.
...which does enhance performance. In this case stability at highway speeds.

And I will never stop looking at my RX-8!

The brake lights are round, as a rotary's should be. Having a big central tach is another nod to the really old school of Rotary.

As for the car being refined? Elegant? I think it is, very much so. Daring, bold, too.

I do really dig the tail lights... this car's got a fantastic fantail! Much cuter hiney than dare-I-say-it the Miata or the SA/FB.

What annoys me most about our tail lights? The fact Ford decided to steal them and put them on the Explorer? i think. That p!sses me off.

Our cars are overdesigned and garish? hmmm... I suppose this is a beauty?

I doubt anyone will claim (suburu owners or not) that the wrx is a great looking car, or was intended to be so. But it looks nice enough, and performs like hell.

Why can't Subaru just hire designers and make the car look better? I don't see why it would hurt.

i've wondered the same thing. how many more wrx's would sell if the car had some exterior finesse. it seems they just know what their audience wants, which isnt a stunning looking car. either way, i like the sti and dont find it unattractive.

but, back to the rx-8's tail lights...i didnt like them much at first, but they finished growing on me awhile ago and now i love them. the only part that bugs me are those 2 strut things that are connected to the large round red piece.

They go with the cat whiskers the headlights have.

I'm considering giving my car a single upper fang. Anime fans may recognize that look.. the look of mischief It'll complete the anime cat-look thing this car's got going.
