Might be a silly question but...
Alright -- so I want to sell my RX8 for cash "trade in" to a dealer, the thing is I will not be buying a car in return.
I realize the concept of a "trade-in" is that you get the value of your car applied to the purchase price of your new one. Do all dealerships deal with you even if you arent going to be buying a car from them in return?
Specifically -- I would be trading in my RX8 to a very nice Mazda dealership that I have used for service all the time. Problem is they don't have the kind of car I'm going to be buying so.... how does this all work?
if they took it, do they just pay me via check or something and I sign over the title?

I wouldn't say common. It is done, though.
In my opinion, the only reason a dealer would do it is if he thought he could make easy $$ on the re-sale.
A couple of years ago, I sold my SVT Cobra back to the dealer for cash. For a three year-old car (in Perfect shape), I did really well - within $500 of a private sale without all the grief. I know for a fact that the car was off the lot to the new buyer the same day. The key is the dealer knew the car, and had the buyer waiting - no risk for him.
That being said, I wouldn't expect to see anything over wholesale if I tried this with my RX-8.

if you are too lazy to sell pivate,
just take it to carmax, they actually offer pretty decent price in my experience vs dealers even though they over charge when selling cars.
you still getting the Z06?

It is possible. I know, because I did exactly this process when I traded in my RX8 for my GTO. To trade in a vehicle has advantages as far as tax implications. Everybody knows about that. What you might not know is that its very possible to agree on a price and trade a vehicle into one dealership and purchase a vehicle from a seperate dealership, and have the two dealerships coordinate to make the purchase appear as one transaction. You just have to ask.
I would imagine a shxt dealership wouldn't want to do this because all theyre after is making a buck off the trade in AND the new car purchase. I guess I'm lucky the Mazda dealership I was working with had great service.
And by no means should you think this makes it extra complicated for the dealership. They do this shxt all the time. You just have to communicate exactly what you want to do, get oriented with the process, and carry a bit of paper work with you, and coordinate a few things between the two of them. The dealerships will take care of the rest. Be open just tell them you want a non-Mazda new car.
If I can get Mazda dealership and a Pontiac dealership to work together, without a hitch, anything is possible, right?
