I have a Cooper S...no way it beats an 8...funnily enough though you can feel plenty of torque in the Cooper and it has about the same as the 8. The Cooper is way too heavy for its size which makes it understeer badly when you turn too hard. Plus the magazines numbers are proof. C&D pulled .85 on the skidpad for the Mini versus .91 in their comparo with the 8 and .88 in their long-term. In fact, I don't think its even close who wins.

Take it the track. Driver is the biggest variable but all else being equal, the 8 will eventually, walk away from the Cooper from my experience. I emphasis that my experience is on the track in HPDEs. In a full on race, the 8 might have trouble passing a very well driven Cooper S. In HPDE, the 8 will be right on its tail...until waved by and then slowly drive away.

My trick is to put R spec tyres on the S then I really kick your ***.
The S is about 1-2 seconds slower on track. Not by much, especially tuned ones

I have both. My car is a MT 04 RX8 and my wife's is a MT 03 Mini Cooper S. Both are definitely fun to drive. The Mini handles very well and has a fun amount of power but My RX8 will walk away from her Mini S without much drama.

Hey wait. Gummy, I just realized your're the new RX8 owner in Cool Springs TN right? Meet me for lunch some time and I'll see if I can get my wife to let me borrow her Mini S for the day. You could see for yourself. Of coarse, it might be more fun to get your co-oworker to show you herself. he he

Thanks for the info! I've only had my RX-8 for about 5 weeks and it's my first manual, so perhaps she could beat me (not on public streets of course). Then again, her Mini is her first manual too, though she's only had it since November I think.
Perhaps soon I'll take some sort of driving course sometime and head to the track. I think I would absolutely love that.
Pics? Haha... well, there are pictures of all of us on our company site. Shouldn't be too hard to figure out who's who if you read the profiles.

Yeah, I'm the new RX-8 owner in Cool Springs. I'm up for lunch with another rotary owner any time. I'm sure there's tons I could learn

Please don't race someone in the twisties. As much fun as it is to drive, racing on narrow public roads is a recipe for disaster. Keep in mind racetracks are much wider than normal roads, which allows cleaner passing, not to mention gravel traps and close medical attention. In my opinion, it's just not worth it.
By the way, what roads are you thinking about? If you give me the area and the road name I can Google Earth it.

Thanks for the advice. I wouldn't actually race on public roads. I'm **** even about the speed limit Not sure about what roads around here are good. I'm in Franklin (Nashville area), TN though.

Go to a racetrack and get a timing transpoder fitted for both of you. Public roads are just way too dangerous! The Mini has a short wheelbase and it should be very good in very tight bends. The way I see it... you should be able to use the RX8's superb chassis balance to come out on top. GOOD LUCK!
