My biggest gripe is the POS Bose sound system. Compared with other sports cars I have driven, it is totally substandard. My Hyundai even has a better sound system from the factory than the RX-8. CD's sound absolutely miserable; no bass, no treble, and muddy midrange. The new Mitsubishi Eclipse has a kickass system from Harmon/Kardon, and the Chrysler Crossfire has a nice system from Infinity, both with subwoofers. You actually have to turn the bass DOWN. I hope Mazda will drop the Bose for '06. Why should I have to drop another $500 (at least) to get a decent sounding system when I already spent more for the Bose (I wanted the rest of the package as well, not just the upgraded stereo).

No inside trunk release is another gripe. And pressing the key fob when its in the ignition doesn't do it either.

Mine has a trunk release inside. It is under the dash right by the drivers door.

You haven't spent enough time with the owners manual or your car. It is below the steering column to the left near the door. (US Model is at least)

Well, what do you know. There is a trunk release. I never even though to look there. Usually they are in a locking glove box or right with the fuel door release. Kind of an odd place to put it.

Thank you.

There's not much worse than having a short dipstick.

LOL, ya think? It's been my little pet whiny rant since I've been here

Try finding it now without looking. Gahead, I dare ya. Or better yet: try it with gloves in the winter.

I still think it's some sort of practical joke by the Mazda techs. "Haha, lets make this button, we'll like HIDE it... yea, like UNDER the dash... and get this, we'll make it flush with the surface... no tactile feedback whatsoever. It'll drive em CRAZY!"

Had car for 3 days...My super minor gripes so far...
1. Bose is...dissappointing, my 2002 Altima has a better Bose system...
2. No auto headlights on (I know I know...its not needed but Im used to auto-on)
3. One level heated seats and passenger seat not powered
4. Only driver side auto-down but not up?
5. Wierd bulge in passenger foot well
6. Little in cabin storage, would have thought non-navs should have that area as storage??

Super satisfying parts of car I must mention...
1. I love the seats, they fit me perfectly and the leather feels great
2. VERY quiet inside and well built, no rattles in my car...hope I will not hear any in future
3. Engine purs sweet as my VQ35 in my nissan, but in its own different way
4. The subtle interior lighting, many people hate it, but I like it...and hope to get the matching floor lamps in the future, oops forgot to say the lighted steering wheel controls are wicked

Talking Trunk Release Button

I've actually thought the trunk release is well done. It's out of the way but easy to hit once you know where it is. Just put your hand, palm up, against the lower part of the dash and slide it down and forward. You'll go straight to it and all you have to do is continue with a little push. Trunk open! And the hood release, right beside it, is a pull lever. That's good 'cause there's no problem opening the hood when you went for the trunk.

BITCH BITCH BITCH, so many minor stupid complaints about the car. You can get into a Ferrari and you will find problems with it if you look. ANY car as a matter of fact. All you complainers, I have an idea for you. Sell your 8, and try to find the PERFECT car, that way we don't have to hear you complain about minor things like the dipstick being hard to get to. Get a flash light, USE IT. GEEZ!!!

Its not the best, but its not that bad. With a sub, and added tweeters, its much better.

2. No auto headlights on (I know I know...its not needed but Im used to auto-on)
I dont care for this feature, but I agree its strange the car doesnt have it.

3. One level heated seats and passenger seat not powered
I dont like leather so I didnt get those options on my touring model, I think power seats are a waste, how often do you really change your seating position? Its not hard to do with the manual seat, less weight, and you dont have to worry about the motors buring up....meaning you cant move the seat.

4. Only driver side auto-down but not up?
I wish we had both front windows auto down AND up....oh well. Someone made a mod to do this with old miatas, maby they will do it with the RX8

5. Wierd bulge in passenger foot well
my girlfriend loves it as a foot rest, but that bulge is the HUGE rotary catalytic converter. I also found it to be a good 'hot plate' to set a box (yes a box, from dunken donuts) of coffee on, for the drive to work.

6. Little in cabin storage, would have thought non-navs should have that area as storage??
What do you mean??? There is TONS of storage in the cabin, BIG deep pocket in each door, glove box, under the radio (ashtray makes a great cell phone spot for non-smokers) the pocket on the back of the pass seat, rear cup holders, front cup holders, center consol, rear trunk pass thru pocket, rear center consol pocket. All of those (except the trunk pass thru) can be reached by the driver with little effort.

Super satisfying parts of car I must mention...
1. I love the seats, they fit me perfectly and the leather feels great
I like the seats, but wish they had a little taller/fimer side bolsters. I was used to race seats in my miata.

2. VERY quiet inside and well built, no rattles in my car...hope I will not hear any in future
I love the way the car feels/sounds so solid, even on bumpy roads, with the AC on setting 2 and the radio up (but at a volume you can still talk over) and the car cruising at 60mph, its as quiet as many lexus I have driven, plus just as smooth.

3. Engine purs sweet as my VQ35 in my nissan, but in its own different way
totaly agree.

4. The subtle interior lighting, many people hate it, but I like it...and hope to get the matching floor lamps in the future, oops forgot to say the lighted steering wheel controls are wicked
I love the power up sequence for the lights on the gauges, and the way you can set the front map lights to turn on/off with the door dome light. pretty cool, and the way the lights fade on/off.
IMO the car is better than great, esp for the price

1) Oil dipstick in hard-to-reach location.

2) No hooks in rear of cabin to hang up blazer or sportcoat, or anything on a hangar.

no the needle doesn't change color. If you look the blue lights in the back are angled to reflect off the back of the dashboard to give that red/blue glow.. So as the needle climbs it will reflect that light making it look like it's change colors it happens very fast though (I know this because i goto 9k almost every day! )

Um, let me see if I've got this straight: you voluntarily CHOSE to read a thread entitled "minor rants about RX-8", and then you complain because you didn't want to see minor rants? Just what was it you were expecting to see here? Or did you misread it and think the thread was "minor pants about RX-8"? Sorry you were disappointed that this wasn't the fashion page.

Ok, here is my new minor rant: the car is so FRUSTRATINGLY inconsistent! I come to this site to get answers, and most of the time all I get are contradictions. The camel's back was just broken for me reading the thread about the functional value of the engine cover. One guy insists that when he took his off, his engine ran much hotter, the fan ran all the time. A different guy insists that he had the exact *opposite*, without his cover it ran *cooler*. Look at the poll someone did not too long about about results of using lower octange gas: some people say it performs worse, some people say it performs better, some say they get better mileage, some say worse mileage. Same thing with flooding, some people say they ignore flooding, don't rev when shutting down, blithely move the car into the garage without warming it up, and never have a flood problem. Others, obviously, report all sorts of flooding problems. How can the same car give such wildly different results to different people? I love this car to death, but god it's frustrating to not be able to get a straight answer about anything!

End rant.

Honestly, some of you blokes "ranting" about the most minor of details. I'd bet you'd be the sort of guys who, if lucky enough to be screwing a bikini model on the beach, would be complaining about getting sand in your a$$ crack!

I'll give you one thing to be thankful for - the fact that in the US you guys get the car pretty damn cheap. Here in Australia we're paying about $US42000 for the model with leather!

This is not ment to be insulting, but welcome to reality. When you ask for opinions you get a range of answers. When you test well formed hypotheses against emperically derived data then you start to get somewhere. This forum is good for the former, but chaff to sift through to find the latter.

I appreciate that. I'm not talking about opinions. I'm talking about claimed facts, of the form "I did X, and my results were Y" (and then the next guy says "Well I did X, and my results were -Y"). I do try hard to separate the opinions from the facts. And unless people are outright lying in reporting their data, the facts appear to be that the car simultaneously gets better AND worse mileage on lower octane gas, simultaneously runs hotter AND colder without the engine cover... what hypotheses should one draw from this?

Yeah, This is exactly what I mean. I understand you were saying that the 8, as a population of cars, appears to be inconsistant car to car when tested for gas mileage, response to FI, or whatever. What I am saying is that you are essentially asking for a big bunch of experiments from many many people without controling how the experiments are done. You get a bunch of answers but you dont really know, individually, what questions were asked. This can be an issue with something as simple as gas mileage. I think most of the "data" you get on that topic are really impressions.

I knew what I was in for, just annoyed that the tread was started and so many people who claim to love the car, complain about stupid minor that makes no differance in anything. I agree with with the bikini model sand in your *** crack guy in Australia! Im with you buddy!

I use the rear seatbelt guides. They work fairly well, and don't wrinkle the clothes.
