I put a set of Rotora cross-drilled and slotted rotors(stock size) and Project Mu Titan pads on last month before I went meet up with some fellow RX'ers in Atlanta. Even with some taller tires the car stopped damn good. Now that I have more appropriate tires on the car it stops even better. A dog ran out in front of my car yesterday and I was able to stop within a foot of his head, from 35 mph, without drama or major weight transfer. That was cool! Good braking made even better.

This is true for me, but in a different way.

My previous car was a '98 E36 M3. I liked that car quite a bit, but never really really loved it. Perhaps because my car before that one was a '93 RX-7 R1, which I really loved. Among many other cars, I've also owned the 1st & 2nd gen RX-7's too. There's just something about lightweight rotary cars that really appeals to me. The RX-8 has the same RX-7 DNA and is unique in that respect vs. other cars on the market.

I can afford a more expensive car, certainly the new Corvette, new Boxster S, and Lotus Elise have my attention. I'm always thinking of what my next car might be, just my nature. But somehow the RX-8 is the best of all worlds for me at this time. I've said it before, the RX-8 is greater than the sum of it's parts. And all at a bargain price to boot.

So sorry, I'm not in the minority, I do love this car!

I did a fair amount of searching on the Probe GT and the best review I could find on the 2.5L V-6 (164 HP) version stated a 0 to 60 MPH time of 8.5 seconds. Isn't that the top engine option for the Probe? In any case, this much slower than the RX-8. Perhaps you could explain your claim? Was your Probe highly modified?

So it seems that dmp is, indeed, in the minority when it comes to being a little underwhelmed by the seeming lack of stand-out performance from the RX-8.

Query made and answered!

Again - read through the thread...it's been discussed.

My Probe GT had 160hp/162lbs-ft at the front wheels with Intake and Exhaust. 248hp/250lbs-ft at the front wheels with Turbo and Exhaust.

IIRC, 8.5 seconds was for the ATX Probe GT...about a second slower than the MTX.
And about 3.5 seconds slower than 'my' particular GT. :-D

Oh, I see, you're comparing modified cars to a stock RX-8. As someone else suggested, maybe you should mod your 8 a bit.

Well was your Probe and Miata stock when you bought them? Maybe the state of them then might be a better comparison

...then I'd have to bring up the $$ I paid for the RX8...it's better to just compare them as they stood.

Total Investment in Probe: $5500
Total Investment in Miata: $8500
Tolal Investment in RX8: $28,xxx

:-/

Hiya DMP,

I think what you're reflecting on most is that different people enjoy/like/love different things. If we were all the same, we'd all be driving the same car. :D That'd be great for the lucky manufacturer that built it, but it'd make for a very boring world.

For me, I haven't had a vehicle that I truly enjoyed driving as much as the '8 since my '91 MR2 Turbo. That car was simply a riot. In between, I've had 5 vehicles that were just transportation, rather than an enjoyable driving machine. The '8 isn't perfect to be sure, but for me it's a great blend of style and performance for an affordable price.

Best,
Bill

What the RX-8 does best is that it somehow does an end-run around one of the thorniest automotive compromises. It is a true 4-door sports car. It's easy to overlook what a big deal that is.

It has great manners, yet it can play hardball if pushed. And it allows the driver to pick between these personalities with ease. You don't lose much to gain the useable back seats. You don't suffer for the handling. That combinatioin is something that's rarely if ever been done and it's all due to engineering the car from the ground up to take full advantage of the traits of the rotary engine. The only fly in the ointment is the mileage but other than that there is plenty to love.

Well, damn....if you are going to put it that way...lol.

Am I totally in love with my 8 - think its the best thing around. Nahhhh.

I do love driving it. Love the looks it gets. There are other other cars that would do both of those for me also.

I love driving my jeep. I love the looks it gets too.

Can't compare the two though.

They each feed my ego in a different way.

Now, the Trailblazer my work give me to drive around? Yuck.....

Drives like a log. Terrible gas mileage.

I don't love the Trailblazer.

it was about the price for me.. i got a brand new 04 100kms sports car for 37K CND...simple.

i was not about to pay 50K for an 05 4cyl S2000...that is only slightly better in performance compared to an Rx-8 and less practical...thats plain ridiculous..but understand consumer demand for this car hence the price...

same with the 05 350Z more money and only upside is the engine... but if i wanted that kind of power and torque .. ican turbo this car and beat a 350Z, and still be under the price of a 350Z..especially the alignemnt problem they have..

Sti and Evo were just plain ugly.. great performance..but since i wanted an "all rounder" i dont see me spending 50K on a juiced sedan...

so basically the RX8 is what you get for what you pay... simple! and thats hell of a deal if you compare it usin a price to value ratio.
