money

so i am the owner of a 05 rx8 and ever since the idea of buying a rx8 went into my head, i loved every bit of it. except for one, the hp rate. i figured i'm buying a japanese car so i should be able to upgrade it easily. this was my biggest mistake, if i want to get the power i wanted, i would have to spend a ton of cash. this is due to the car being new, and new technology costs money.

at the end of this year my lease is up and i'm faced with a decision.

if i want to keep my car i'll have to spend upwards of 17k to make it mine

then i'm still faced with the horsepower issue which i've been researching forever. the greddy kit seems to only bring the HP to 300 and for 4k that just doesn't seem worth it. the only kit that seems worth the money is the ptp, which is 8k but increases the hp to 400.

don't get me wrong i love my car, i just wish it had more power. does anyone see the price of turbo's for the rx8 going down anytime soon?

in the back of my mind i just can't see justifying spending 25k on a car to get to 400hp, when i could spend that money on another car with that type of power, maybe a muscle car or something.

what do you guys think?

oh and sry about the wrong forum post

Have you gone and test driven some other cars? It sounds like the RX8 might not be the perfect fit for you. You might as well take advantage of the fact you are on a lease and shop around before you marry yourself to this car.

Yea, go get something else. This car is for a niche crowd. I see pistons in your future.

If you are talking about "only" 300HP, and you would rather have 400HP - It doesn't sound like the 8 is for you.

You did offer a muscle car as something you would consider. I don't know of many muscle cars with good handling... As far as price is concerned, you can always go used.

If you are hunting for 400HP - I think it's time for some test drives

As far as turbo pricing is concerned, you should take a look at this thread: https://www.rx8club.com/rx-8-discussion-3/greddy-turbo-kit-120918/

a g35/37 coupe may be a good idea. You will satisfy ultimate handling and driver's involvement, but you get more hp.

i dont know what everyone else is talking about but if u love the car but just want more hp then i say stick with it. just cus u get a car with 400hp doesnt mean itll be the same as the rx8 but with more hp.

then again its your choice. id get a turbo 8 over any v8 any day tho

The RX8 was never about winning in a straight line. It was about winning at the curves.

If you want an American sports car that has big power, look up the Corvette Z06.

I will be VERY happy with "only" 300hp in the RX-8.

Actually, for $3,200 you get +100 whp with the greddy.

For $7,200, you get + 140 whp with the PTP kit.

Dyno sheets here:

https://www.rx8club.com/series-i-major-horsepower-upgrades-93/dyno-comparison-rx-8-turbo-supercharger-etc-115447/

If 8k is within your budget and you want 400 whp, you will have to look to mazsport, they're extremely close to it now.

so your saying you can spend half the money on a greddy and get near the performance of a ptp/mazsport?

since the turbo is rated at 30hp+ to stock what all would you need to get it to increase so much more?

no, you misread the charts.

stock car makes somewhere around 170 - 190 whp.

with the greddy turbo it will make somewhere around 270 - 300 whp. That's where the +100 whp comes from.

the ptp and mazsport kits right now are in the 340 range because of ignition issues. Mazsport is close to resolving that.

Also consider the larger turbos can make more power with less boost. So with the greddy it'll be running 9-10 psi to make 300, and the mazsport kit can do it somewhere around 7 psi.

...ahhahhahahaha. Thank you for that .

Take it to a dyno... you won't see a number close to 240.

car companies rate their cars at the crank. there is drivetrain loss among other things, which reduce the power that actually gets put down to the wheels. To keep things simple, we generally speak in terms of wheel horse power (whp) since crank horse power is meaningless (unless you're trying to sell cars).

If we're talking about crank hp, then I would tell you that your stock (230 hp) car still makes 100 hp less than my 330 hp turbocharged car.

.....no, the stock rx8 (MT) has ~220 hp at the flywheel; 170-190 hp at the wheels (whp)..............

It doesn't seem like you care about the handling charecteristics, thats where the rx8 shines. If you do want a balance between power/handleing go for a s2k, if you don't mind 2seats. If that isn't enough power for ya, go and get a z22 camaro for like 8K you get 300+hp. I think that car would suite you better. I don't think the 8 is a car for you.

I agree with you, the Mustngs have a horrible suspension from the factory. Well not horrible, I guess not up to par for the power it has, but that's why they can sell it for 26K. Tough he can get a 300HP GT then drop another 5K into it for suspension mods and have himself a bad *** straighlinr car and good road course car as well.

I never said it would last long... $40 later, and I'm back at top speed again.

i know i want to improve my8's power, now i'm just determining the best strategy. greddy turbo seems to make 330hp ish for like 4-5k

but if ptp kits are prommissing 400hp for 8k is it worth it to spend the extra dough? i mean the turbo was in car and driver with claims of 400hp?
why would they put that in the magazine, unless they are mean

thoughts?
