most recent PCM calibration

Today, I went in to have my recall issues squared away (passenger airbag) asked about the mythical "M" flash and it wasnt like pulling teeth with a great dealership in orange county. The service tech asked if i was having any problems, I said "no, the car runs fine!" but he asked if i wanted the update. normally i would have said no, because if it aint broke, dont fix it. However, since the recent TSB from mazda states the all cars should receive the latest calibration level, I agreed to have it done.

here are the results:

before the M:

20 brake tap test: no oil needle sweep
19-20 mpg with mixed city/hwy
never had a flood/ no start event
car pins you to the seat from 4k to 5k, really smashes you into the seat above 6k++ RPM"s (the gradual power increase was incredible)

After the "M" flash:
20 brake tap test: THE NEEDLE NOW SWEEPS
19-20 mpg mixed city/hwy
still never experienced flood/no start
NOW the car feels slower?? not sure if im imagining it, but will observe this for a few days. (it just seems that the pinning to the seat feeling is gone, im not sure if it alters the the air/fuel mixture but the car feels a little different)

so, the debate continues... to "m" flash or not to flash. in my case, it was questionable because i never experienced the issues that called for the recent calibration.

moral of the story, if the car feels fine before all the PCM calibration hysteria, maybe one shouldnt do it until something gives you a reason to do so.

happy rotoring!

just wanted to make one more thing clear, the 8 is amazing, and still thrills me each time I'm behind the wheel. Im anticipating that the new calibration may actually increase the 20/mpg average i had already been getting before the flash. I'll keep the group posted...
