I recently went out to a guy's house to unflood an 04 AT. The thing was quite stubborn and conservative amounts of oil in the chambers were not having the desired effect, so I eventually had to dump in more than usual to build good enough compression to start it.
Of course it smoked thick white smoke for about 5-7 minutes after startup.
Once it was settled down and running normally we shut it off and I was packing up my tools.
Just then a silver jeep grand cherokee with strobe lights inside the windshield and hatch glass came driving up the guy's small neighborhood road slowly. Stops, looks around for a minute, then pulls up the guy's driveway a few feet. Then stops, backs up, goes back the other way and goes a few houses over.
Then about 5 minutes later comes back to the guy's house and the guy inside (must have been a cop or something) asks him if there was a vehicle fire reported. We played dumb and were like "nope, we didn't report anything" and the guy left. lol.

On the highway if you're constantly changing gears and varying speeds enough to switch gears all the while, then you're not driving the car correctly
The only times you even should be shifting on the highway other than speed limit changes, congestion slowing everyone down and construction is if 6 gear isn't enough to get by someone on a hill or you're getting onto an on/off ramp.
I usually go 75mph on the highway and 6th is plenty to blow by people and even with congested traffic, take the on/off ramps way over the suggested limit, drive very aggressively, downshift if traffic really slows down and yet I still get 21~22 mpg on the highway.
Some 8's just get better mileage than others.

Mileage looks normal to me, the RX sucks gas like an M-1 tank. I drive 80% city and over 6 years have averaged 11 to 14MPG. I once hit 21 on all highway driving but 18 to 19 is more common. When the orange light comes on the fuel gauge and I drive an extra 10 miles I fill up about 14 gallons. I usually see 80 to 100 at half a tank.
Get use to it, I tried everything to increase the gas mileage and nothing did anything. The Rotary is just and inefficient engine and poor MPG is just part of the package.

no, read again what they wrote.

Yanker,
There was some concern for us when the needle dropped 1/4 of a tank in just 10 miles but like the others have said, it is more important to measure total MPG not just use the gauge and panic! Ever had a car that the last 1/4 tank seemed to last forever?
As for your heat issues (if other than the ****) could be a heater core or thermostat...better pray it's just a thermostat. If you have high condensation inside the car, with a bit of a film on your windshield then it is likely your core. Also, providing the core is on the passenger side, and if you notice a damp passenger side floorboard with no known leaks in floorboard, then that could point to the core as well. If the floor is wet, get a white towel and blot the floorboard with it, if it has a greenish tint then it is leaking antifreeze and is most certainly your core. Assuming 8's are just like any car as far as where the core is located...it means tearing your dash out just to get to the core. I'd suggest taking it somewhere, just to pin point the problem and then go from there.

I don't have much hope for better fuel mileage in the summer because driving with windows down means you can hear the engine better, and that is just another reason to run it to 7-8K rpms.
Oh well, it is what it is.
