Conversely, why lie to them? Unless you're embarrased that it's a mazda.
I would much rather tell them the truth about what is. They may like it so much that they go to a dealer to check one out, maybe even buy one. It never hurts to have more interest in the car. Especially a car with a rotary engine, something that will become a thing of the past without continued interest.
Plus, you look like a total *** if they ever find out.

If someone says to you, is that Ferrari? and you answer yes, when you know it isn't, that's lying. I find it hard to belive that you don't see that as lying, it's pretty clear. And, as much as I am sure you're a really important person, and your time is very valuable, it takes seconds to tell them it's a mazda rx-8 and/or a rotary and that they can check the internet for more information because you can't waste anymore of your precious time talking cars with people.
I would love to be standing at a gas station when you agree that your car is a ferrari, I would make you look like a fool.
Oh, and their not asses for not knowing, their just not car enthusiasts. But they never will be if liars like you think of them, and treat them, like asses.

I don't know blueeyes. You are making a big deal out of a very minor one especially where it is legibly written 'Mazda' on the rear and I don't know how you confuse a pony to a flying 'M'.

I didn't make a big deal out of it, I just asked why lie? Especially when you could turn someone else onto the car. They obviously think its good looking, and the rotary engine could do with more fans. I simply offered a counter point, one with validation no less. It's obvious he didn't like being called a liar, but that's what he is. It would take the same amount of time to say no, its not a ferrari, as it does to say yes it is a ferrari.
And it's a prancing horse, not a pony :p. Maybe the people didn't see the back or front of the car, maybe they only saw the side view, and instead of walking to the back of the car, decided to ask. Should they have walked around, yeah proabably, should he lie to them, no definitely not.

Me, I will talk to anyone, at almost anytime about cars, or in particular my car. But not everyone is a car nut, but I guess it would be worse to let them be misinformed, then they spread bad information.

not sure why anyone would lie about it, i tell them everytime the make/model.... i get less questions about the car now than i did when i first had it, at that point everyone wanted to know what it was and who makes it
if anything, it's good for Mazda and the future of the rotary engine if they meet a happy owner

I'm a liar and I love it. :D There's a few people out there that make assumptions about my car. Like telling me "Hey that's the new Viper or something right?" "Yes it's the new Mazda Viper dude." Come on! But then you have those people that come up to me and ask "Hey what kind of car is that?" I'll happily tell 'em it's a Mazda Rx8. Even talk about it for awhile. Let's face it this car's a conversation waiting to happen. That's why we have an Rx8 club, you know? There's just a difference between people that think they know everything and those that are honestly wanting to know. I perfer the latter to have my conversations with.

I get a kick out of some of the elitist mentality I've run into. People will be interested and ask what it is. When they hear, "Mazda" I can see their interest wane. I guess all of us, including them, can't drive Porsche's and such...

I have gotten Viper, and couple of people asking, is that some expensive exotic car?

I can't wait to educate people about the rotary engine and how I think it's better than a piston engine. I don’t care if they call my car a viper or a neon, they leave knowing that it’s an RX-8, and is like no other car on the road. :D
