My 8 is beeping at me

I mentioned this in passing over in the Audio forum, but I thought it might get a little more attention here.

Does anyone know if the alarm or computer system in the RX-8 will beep at you if something is wired wrong? I ask because I just had an XM Radio Commander installed today, and since the installation, the car has been beeping at me. It is intermittent - sometimes the duration between beeps is 2 minutes, sometimes 5 minutes, sometimes 8 minutes. There's no pattern.

It beeps whether the XM Commander is on or off. It beeps whether the stereo is on or off. The only thing it seems to require to beep is for the key to be in the ignition. Everything seems to be working normally, except for that weird beeping.

I'm taking it back to the installer tomorrow and will tell them about it, but I was hoping someone on here would have some idea how a simple FM Modulator/XM Radio installation could cause this. Thanks.

I have absolutely no idea about XM radio or after market installs, but have you tried shutting the beep off on the dash. As I recall from the owner's manual, the beep is an optional feature , and it can be shut off in the control menu on the dash.

I realize that that won't fix the underlieing problem, but maybe it will be a help in the short term.

Best of luck - H

Thanks for the reply, Haze. Yes, I shut the stereo beeping off and after this new beeping started, I double-checked it and it's still off. So, that's not it. But thanks for the idea!

loco: I instaled a XM in my car and I have no idea what they did that would cause this beeping. I take its the beep like when the door is open with the lights on? Maybe they nicked a wire someplace.

What kind of beeping is it?
I recently read on here that the nav system uses fm modulation to get he signal from the antenna to the system. I don't know if this is b.s. or what but maybe if its true the modulator your using for the xm is interfering. I don't know, take it with a grain of salt.

OK, you guys are going to get a good laugh out of this!

First of all, thanks for the replies and for trying to help me figure this out. It really had me concerned. But here's what really happened....

I heard the beeping this morning coming in to work every 5 minutes, like clockwork. It was unlike any other beep I've ever heard in the car, so I was really freaked out and a little pissed that they screwed up something.

Well, when I got to Crutchfield, the installer guy came running up to me saying, "Hey, did you find my CELL PHONE in the car?" Immediately, this wave of relief went over me. The guy had dropped it under the driver seat, and it was beeping because the battery was running low.

I feel like a dumbass, but at least there's nothing wrong with the car. :o

I am having the same beeping but have not added anything but a radar (direct-wire). and it happens whenever it wants to. Are you pulling the power from the fuse box and in what port? Acc?

LOL. I was going to ask if the beeping only happened at ~9000 RPM, but this is even funnier.

Check for a cell phone hidden in the car. Sorry, Ron, I do not even know how they installed it and the beeping had nothing to do with the installation, so I can't help you out.

Glad the rest of you are enjoying this! :D

LOL, that reminds me of my sister's Subaru... brand new, and my sister and hubby think it's a dog-- no acceleration, just awful. (IkeWRX, just wait... ) Dealer can't find anything wrong, all systems check out, new tune and everything, still pokey. They whine all the time about how slow it is.

One day, Sis takes car to a spray-it-yourself carwash and after leaving, it suddenly is like turboed! It zooms! She's like wtf! She had sprayed water up the tailpipe and asks me if that would do it. I'm pretty skeptical. But oh darn it, she forgot the carpets at the wash. Gets new ones, car lousy again...

Turns out the mats blocked full depression of the gas pedal! Doh!
