My baby was hit last night
Fellow RX-8ers,
After only 5 weeks with her, she was rear-ended last night. No major damage just a slightly pissed off driver (ME). Some woman didn't know how big her Mercedes was and decided to try squeeze by my RX... Crunch. ARGH!
I have a question, what is that black plastic strip called below the rear bumper? That got a major scratch down it that I doubt will polish out cause it's plastic. Thinking might get it replaced but need to know what to ask for!
Thanks for your help

Man, that really sucks.
Time for a Mazdaspeed underspoiler. You can probably have it for about $750.

Here's a pic of the undamaged part...
Yeah sucks. At the weekend some ahole decided his white paint looked good on my door and left a nice scrap, too. Man, what is it with people not giving a rat-*** about other peoples stuff. I park about 2 miles away from other cars in the lot, too.
Cheers!

Was the accident her fault? If so, I'm a little curious as to why you're worrying about what the parts are called and how much they cost. I hope you didn't fall for the the old "don't report it to my insurance or the police, I'll pay for your damage" line.
As an attorney who deals with this all the time, I can tell you that you're asking for grief if this is the case. Often in such cases the person you're trying to be nice to will suddenly want to dicker with you about how much the parts should cost, where you should get the work done, etc. Eventually they may deny that it was their fault, and you are left trying to explain why you didn't make a timely claim or a police report.
I may be reading more into your post than is there. But if not, go make a police report and report it to the woman's insurance company pronto. She made the mistake, and it's not up to you to make her life easier at your expense. Make it easy on yourself . Insist on a quality repair facility, and let them worry about the name of the damaged part(s).

Thanks for this great advice. She was asking if she could take care of the damage herself.

That black plastic strip is not available as a separate part—and believe me, I researched this when I got a scratch on mine last summer—you need a whole new bumper.
The good news is that the price of a new Mazda rear bumper is less than you'd think—mine was $308.30, unpainted. And as others have said, this should be covered by insurance anyway.

Thanks New Yorker.
Sorry this happened.

sorry to hear about this tranceman. do u have a pix of the actual scratch so we can see how bad the damage is?
maybe if it's not too bad u can use some black plastic dye (like forever black) to re-color it in. if it's really bad, then u might want to get a new bumper.
either way hope u get it fixed soon.

I love the paint job by cjwaggs—that's quality work!
Still, I'm not a fan of the bumper being all the same color. Maybe it's just me, but it makes the rear of the car seem awfully large. Like it has a big butt. I almost think Mazda made the bottom piece black in an effort to make the rear appear smaller.

I had a hit and run on my car this past weekend. Went out to hang out with friends and have a drink, then wander around for a few hours. A drink turned into 4 or 5, and I wound up walking home (which is fine, I live close). I came back the next morning, and BAM, huge dent in my baby...
I had it a bit past the 5 week mark, I was on 8 weeks, but still... pretty damn close to that. Whoever hit my car didn't leave a note or anything like that...

what is it with people. Sorry to hear about the dent in your baby. I feel for you.
Im just having problems trying to clip the bumper back under the left rear light cluster now. Sigh.
