My engine is going to be replaced - Help
#26
I realize many have said the engine replacement issue is limited to a handful of people, but it does seem that this is a much bigger problem with the RX-8 than many other cars based on the admittedly unscientific experience I've had in visiting other car owner forums.

Well the engine replacements are still a very small number compared to the number of 8's sold in NA. And because this is the largest 8 enthusiasts website with over 20,000 members AND those whose engines have been replaced and post threads tend to get alot of attention. Not to mention the fact that those of us who frequent this forum on a daily basis see these threads over and over again I think some tend to overreact a bit.

I agree for the most part.
It's just that before buying my RX I spent time on a few other forums, and while everyone has their share of problems with their cars, the only other forum that seemed to have as many posts about complete engine replacements was Toyota, oddly enough.
The last generation Toyota 3.0 liter engine had a known sludge build-up problem that would eventually cause the engine to seize.

As I have said be thankful Mazda is giving you a brand new engine. They don't have to. They could easily take out the engine, replace the seals and put it back in. That is unless the housings are damaged. Other cars have problems as well. It's just that they are serviced, not replaced. I've seen engines (all couple years old) from Saturn and Toyota (among others) need to be rebuilt. My friends dad has a pontiac and they recalled the entire year because of head gasket failure. It's just with a piston engine they can do that major service where as a rotary is a sealed engine.

no you are not - i have been told that all replacements that are coming are remanufactured(rebuilt) engines. if they tell you you are getting a brand new engine make them show you proof that it is a new one from hiroshima. the remans are fine but just want you to know what you are getting.

So mines an '05 with less than 9000 miles on it. Your telling me that if for some reason(god forbid) I should need a new engine next week they'll put a reman. engine in it? I have a 1983 Monte Carlo SS that had a reman. engine put in a few years ago and I started having issues with it around 4000 miles. What kind of warranty are they giving on the remanufactured engines?

I got my car back yesterday. They replaced the Engine, oil injectors, Coils, Cat, plugs, etc. Total cost to Mazda was $7,700. The car ran very strong. Stronger that has ever had. They told me that a faulty oil injector damaged the first engine. I don't know what to think any more. Unfortunately, I had to return the car because the A/C did not work. I love this car, but I'm ready to get rid of it. What are the chances that Mazda will buy it back? How does it work? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Still driving the rental (1 Month)

After doing that much work on the car I would think they would be very reluctant to buy it back unless you have some basis for requesting they do that. Look into your states lemon laws. If the Florida lemon law does not apply in your case, I doubt that you have any leverage.

Update;
Had to take the car back for an oil leak and moisture in the tail lights. Got a car rental, again, for a day. They replaced the oil pan (there was crack) and replaced both tail light housings. Send a certified letter to Mazda USA (Customer Mediation) with copy of all the service performed to the car (Very Large Envelope). In the letter, I demand to qualify for the repurchase program again. I was offered this option due to the HP issue when I bought the car. They received the letter a week ago. No reply or acknowledgement yet. We'll see what happens.
Peace

It never hurts to ask, but the HP buy-back offer had a clear expiration date. If you did not accept the offer by 10/1/2003 it was withdrawn. If you accepted the $500 credit card and the free maintenance, then you waived your right to the buy back. Either way, Mazda has no obligation on that issue any more.
Your best bet is your state's lemon laws.

most lemon laws require that the dealership has looked at the same problem three times and still been unable to fix....and they have to attempt a repair each time....unfortunately it sounds like they're doing something different every time you have the car in the shop.........and i'm sure mazda will get back with you, if they don't your more than welcome to call their customer assistance number....might get things jump started
