It's the air pump. No big deal.

found a youtube video. that's exactly what it is. could it be causing the performance issues the car is having?

not really since it only turns on momentarily when the cat is warming up and shuts off most of the time.

Nope. The air pump has exactly zero affect on performance.

nothing to do with the check engine light flashing and lack of power,, which just goes away for no reason.

check engine light flashing means you have misfire. check (replace) coils and spark plugs.

As usual, jason gives sound advice. :-)

As for the air pump, it can set a check engine light, but not until it seizes up and causes the air pump fuse to blow... And then it will set a solid check engine light, not a flashing one.

Ouch, don't do that... A Mazda dealership will completely rip you off.

You can get plugs at Autozone/Kragen for $80

Coils you really should buy online from someone reputable, maybe even take this time to upgrade to the BHR coils?

they ripped me off. I just don't have the time or energy for this. I can't even stand to tell you what they charged me, although I am going back next week to get the cat replaced under the extended warranty. it's running really well right now anyway.
they tried to get me to do the motor mounts, I said why , I'm not noticing any untoward vibrations...

Are you sure that table saws don't sound like your engine?
