My muffler- he said "CUT IT OFF"

Hi ,
I've been exploring options for getting a upgraded exhaust - mainly for sound.

I have a problem with spending $600 + though. I took the car my exhaust guy (who's secret garage is behind the bowling alley), and he said...."since you have the cat converter and a resonator inline you could take off the muffler and hook up the pipes direct."

He also stated that you would have to unhook your battery in order for the car computer to tune itself to the temperature & flow change.

I wanted to hear your thoughts on this "operation". I will probably go ahead an do it then post some video, unless someone knows of a big no-no.

wish me luck - Jamie

If you are looking to use cheap mufflers they dont really hold up to Rotary BBQ.

Personally I would just get the RB exaust. The one on my miata was well worth the $400 I spent on it.

EDIT: the common thought on the RB exaust on the RX-7 club is that the RB exaust sounds just like God Bitch slapping sombody.

its not going to throw a cel for taking the muffler off. and muffler has nothing to do with emissions themselves but it may not be legal to run without a muffler in your state. need to cxheck that out

I know little about emmissions testing (yay mid-Ga) but dont you have to have a CARB sticker or something for exaust? without that you would fail (If you would have to have the CARB sticker).

If this is true you all owe Notears a pepsi.

I think you all are way off. Looks like all he is saying is, take off the muffler and make a Y pipe out of the car. Srt-4's didnt come with mufflers, hey just had the cat and res. but the turbo did silence it abit.

I'd say go for it if he can do a nice job and Y pipe. If you dont like it and it was done well you could just unbolt it and put the stock back on or have it cut and 2 mufflers placed in later.

It is still gonna cost money to fabricate that. What is the limit you are actually willing to spend on this? Exhausts aren't that freaking expensive (if you are purchasing just for sound).

Hahaha! The above words were in reference to a guy who said a CEL will be activated by removing the muffler! His posting has been deleted - that's why this thread makes no sense at all now! LOL

BTW Jamie... Synthetic oil will void your warranty.

The muffler guy is going to charge me $140 to take off the muffler and fabricate a Y.

I asked about back pressure and he said "back pressure schmack pressure - you'll have plenty with the cat and resonator"

Sounds fine to me. Just make sure he doesnt cut the pipe, Have him make a new pipe from the from the flange back. This way you can just bolt the old system right back up if your not happy.

You could unbolt it to see what it sounds like w/o a muffler, but the exhaust is gonna exit under the car instead of behind it so thesounds will be alittle differant.

I dont think Cats really give much backpressure, and resonators dont give much backpressure either.

for some reasonThis guy sounds like he has a mullet, and drives a trans-am.

Does he?

Actually, he sounds like a guy that wants to make money fabricating an exhaust wether it works or not.

I have to agree. This is going to be too loud with just the cat and resonator. Do you want to know how loud? Pull off the cat back and rev the engine. No if you also pull the cat and resonator off, that will make your ears bleed.
