Back pressure is a bad thing. You never want any backpressure under any circumstances ever!!! You show me a race car with backpressure and I'll show you a loser. What you want it velocity. When people go to larger pipes they think that they reduced backpressure. What they actually reduced was exhaust velocity and velocity is necessary for scavenging. Using a pipe that is too small will kill top end power because there is backpressure up there. The pipe can't flow enough for the top end flow requirements. This logically tells people that backpressure equals low end torque. Nope. All you did was to increase low end velocity which helped down low. Backpressure varies with rpm. The lower the rpm, the smaller the pipe can be due to less air. However this small pipe is not good for higher rpms. The goal is to have zero backpressure with the smallest pipe possible. Optimally you would want a pipe to change size and length as rpms rise but we can't do that yet.

There is nothing wrong with removing the muffler. It has no other purpose than to silence. That's it. Removing it may give you 3-4 more hp but that's it. It will give you a lot more noise though. At idle and light loads it might just sound throaty but at full throttle it will probably just be unbearable. Try it but don't do it in the hopes of going faster. It's not going to help in a usable way.

Check for sound clips of a straight midpipe here on the forumn and you will see it is loud.

Use to run my RX-4 on the strip with uncapped headers and a turn out pipe to not burn the underside of the car up. Was at Seattle International Raceway on the line and my buddy said the guy in the tower said "Here we have one of the loudest cars out here today next to the Funny Cars." So I hope you have some earplugs when that thing hits 9000 RPM.
Not to mention the backfire blasting that will more than likely be going on during decelleration. Should wake up the neighborhood.
Have Fun.

Holy **** - is everyone in this thread a goddamn retard? (Most of you, anyways)...

He never said anything about removing the cats! Nor putting on a header!!!

The stock exhaust manifold is very thick, and much quieter then a header. Comparing them in sound levels is STUPID.

He never said he was removing the cat. Comparing a car with a stock manifold, and cats inline, with a car that is straight header, is STUPID!!

Hmm, yeah, find a sound clip of a car with no cats, listen to it, and now you have a PERFECT idea of what your car will sound like WITH cats.

.......WTF?!

Just unbolt your muffler at the flange and pull it out. Drive it for a day or two and you'll know
if it's something you want permanently. That way you're not out anything...
Have your muffler guy fab you some tailpipes or put your old muffler back on...

Why does everything have to be so difficult around here?

I was saying that you are narrow minded in your views.
AND JUST WHAT FACT WAS FALSE?
The fact that his exhaust will be VERY loud with out a muffler?
I think you missed the whole point of his thread, I was simply enlightening him to think about the noise level his exhaust will obtain.
Unlike a piston engine the Rotary is EXTREMELY LOUD.
Something you obviously know nothing about.
I am trying to give him an idea in my post that he should be aware of the decibles that he is going to get from taking the muffler off. You seem to think campareing it to open headers is just not realistic. I dont think you have ever heard a rotary with out any type of exhaust restriction such as a muffler. And how much noise is a cat going to stop?
Why dont you stop policeing the threads looking for something that YOU think is not to your specs (which seem to be very tiny) and take in the whole picture.
You are the one that is defeated...
If that is the game you want to play.

Holy cow. You made a whole lot of assumptions about me, all of which were...wrong. Defeat? Hah!

I happen to have heard a rotary in all types of condition. Open exhaust manifold, Open header (dual and collected), header and presilencer, header and cat...manifold and cat..

Oh, did I mention this was all on my own car? Yeah, pwnt.

Taking JUST the mufflers off of the RX-8 does NOT make it incredibly loud. The noise compared to an open (collected) header rotary is NO WHERE NEAR THE SAME. Thats like comparing a tame monkey to a wild ape.

I'm pretty sure you just got defeated.

Have YOU ever heard an RX-8 without mufflers, but everything else stock? Hm, oh yeah, I have. You apparently haven't. DEATH COMES FOR YE!

EDIT: Just noticed the cat comment. Yes, the stock cat is actually the most quiet-ing peice of the entire exhaust system. Try starting a car peice by peice when putting on the exhaust, and you'll know that.

You are just amazing. I have seen inferiority complexes but man you got a problem ,,were you just abused by all the bigger kids in your life? And now you have to take the context of something and twist it around so as to make yourself look like a genius,
YOU THINK LIKE YOU KNOW IT ALL AND EVERYBODY ELSE IS JUST WRONG IN ALL THEY SAY. No one is going to look at you as a genius when it comes to the Rotary. Oh great wise and powerful Sh_t for Brains.
Plus the fact that you dont know how to READ.
The statement I was making was a comparison, not an exact duplicate as to what the sound was going to be.
So what the FU_K is your problem?
OK I will concede,,,THAT YOUR A MORON.
You got a lot of nerve calling all the people on this forum "Goddamn Retards"
Why don't you pull your head out of your *** and inhale a breath of common sense.
This is the last thing I am going to write about how STUPID you are.
I know you will come back with some sort of retort.

So in closing "go Fu_k yourself you Pusillanimous Twit !"
I will not waste my time with you any more. I have wasted enough time already.

MORON,,,,, Shesh

D@$n...you guys are cut throat. Can't we all just get along. One thing you could try is putting a round dynomax muffler in place of the resonator then add your Y pipe.....just a thought. Hey man just let us know how things turn out.

Def untrue, cat will silence some, no where near as much as stock mufflers though.

Haven't f'ed with an 8's exhaust yet. But non turbo 13B on the 7 is very loud with out mufflers. very very loud w/o cat or mufflers. Currently have no cats and the RB
"cat back" for the win. Loud but the RB sounds sexy as hell. Plus it shoots fire ***** at all the pistons behind her for the win.

IMO get the RB ehaust, materials and build quality are unmatched and the sound = the sex. Worth every penny.

^^^^ Hmm...I'm gonna have to recheck this with my car.

The difference I found last time was that with the mufflers off, cat still on, the car was entirely bareable, tons quieter then most Honda's you hear running around :P. Taking off the cat, after that, made me want to commit suicide.

Probably how you should have originally replied instead of calling everyone "goddamn retards".

I took my exhaust can off, and now I run a straight pipe back from the cat into a Y then I put 4" tips on the end. It sounds awesome and looks good as hell. And its not as loud as everyone may think.
