My RX-8 just hit the big 70k mark! No problems!
I am happy to say and share with all of you owners, I am pleased to hit the 70k mark with no problems, 1 flood (my fault) not the cars fault. Its been trouble free since i brought my RX-8 with 12 miles on her 2 years and 2 months ago! Religiously change the oil, rev the hell out of my baby daily, and do all the preventive maitnance myself.(replacing wear and tear items/fluids) No shakes or rattles or funky noises from the cabin, interiors look quality one from the day I brought her, hence me detailing my baby on the regular, the seat are not faded or worn out, shifter is still tight like day one, still on the origional clutch, brakes etc.
Paint is still glossy(me waxing and detailing her regularly).... Most importantly, THE CAR IS STILL FUN TO DRIVE!!!!!! My wife loves it, I love it , its my first rotary car and it won't be my last one! Were keeping this one , usually I trade in rides frequently to somthing more powerful, newer or what ever may be the case for me to upgrade. But the RX-8 is very special to us, its been a great car to us and not to mention, ITS SO DANM FUN TO DRIVE!
One thing I have noticed for all the sports car I owned and even cars that i owned, the RX-8 has been more reliable and has been easy on the wallet with the exception of gas, than my two previous gas sipping civics that ate up brakes and had stupid clutch problems , never left me stranded like my 95 prelude(car was a lemon,i think i got a bad honda) , never had goofy electrical issues that my 94 BMW 328is gave us, never has been costly to own like my two out of 3 previous Z cars i owned, the 89 turboZ and 94 twin turbo Z were great cars to own, but costly to maintain, even for me who likes to wrench on cars. My 99 Mustang Gt was pretty reliable until it reached 50k miles and started to fall apart and rattle like a jack in the box! Fast but a POS! Never had to worry about blowing MAFS on the daily like my 02 Maxima did.
Loved the RX-8 when we first brought her, a little skeptical at first , have to admit, hearing the horror stories about the FD RX-7's , was figuring we would dump the RX-8 by 40k miles......30k miles later , and the LOVE is still there!
I think between now and a 100k I have a feeling I will have to upgrade the clutch and flywheel , but the rotary is running strong if not stronger now, feels a little faster too, rumor has it that rotaries get a little faster with age, I can attest to that.
This car has been so FUN all the way! It not the fastet car, or the car that has torque to rip a tree out of the ground, but it by the farthest best all around car that delivers smiles when driven to the limit!

Awesome story DailyDriver2k5. I expect my 8 to be just as reliable too. What's the big fuss?

Wow, am I on rx8club.com!!?!?!?
I love this sort of thread, too. More typical of what most RX-8 owners would be saying if most RX-8 owners visited this forum - or if they even knew it existed. But then, car forums for any brand tend to be Complaint Departments.

I replaced my plugs and wires at 60k miles. Went with the Mazsport wires, best wires for the money! Haven't replaced my coils, there fine. After summer i was going to upgrade them to Mazsports coils, to get a little more performance out of the RX-8.

:Are you there yet?
With all this bad press that rotary engine will blow up on you before 50k miles is false. If you take care of your RX-8 or any rotary for that matter and stick to the proper maitnance and up keep I believe these cars can last and will last for a good little while. And the sad thing is , upkeep on these cars is very inexpensive... granted if you get a bad apple from start , then your doomed from day 1.
I honestly think alot of people who have trouble with these cars, its the owners fault on not having the know how to own and operate a rotary. I talked to a mechanic who worked on Porsches, Ferraris and Lambos, and the main people who had the most problems were the ones who babied those cars. Like the RX-8 those cars were meant to be driven, and driven fast and demanding, not to be driven like there some show horse at a show. Those cars need to be pushed hard on a daily , city driving, slow driving are not meant for those type of cars.

Had mine for a year and already put 28k on the clock; I drive to work 80 miles roundtrip, mostly highway, and I plan to change out the plugs at my 30k checkup. Should I be concerned with my plug wires now too? I don't plan to change those out just yet.

Keep going, you'll likely pass my mileage in the next six months. I just turned over 80K on mine that I got in January 04. Same deal, running strong with no engine issues. I've done all the recalls and MSPs along the way while under warranty. I started premixing at 60K. Changed my own plugs at 45K. At this point I have a wait and see attitude about the new flash but may consider taking it in when the dust settles and see how others have fared with it.

What does this new flash suppose to do?

It changes a number of things on the ECU, but most importantly it increases the engine oiling rate from the oil metering pumps. There has been lots of discussion lately on here about how engine issues may be caused by insufficient lubrication of the apex seals (and after reading ALL of those threads, I can't help but agree). That is why many people here use a small amount of oil ("premix") mixed in with their gas, to compensate for this weak oiling. It's possible that this new flash will take care of that, but for those of us who already have 70K miles on the car, it's too little too late, I would say. Also, the location and number of OMP's may be insufficient, even if the rate is increased, so you might want to consider pre-mixing as well. Although many might consider doing so a just a little bit neurotic, there is plenty of evidence it's a good idea, and it really cant hurt if you're planning on keeping your car running well for more than a couple of years.
For more info, read the very long threads titled "engine issues finally identified" or something like that, and "look at expo's 100K engine" as well as the "sticky: gas/oil pre-mix thread"

thats great news man! i´m already at the 60k mark myself! had 2 dramas with flooding but, was myfault aswell! been talking to a mechanic, which is now a very good friend of mine (14 years experience on rotary engines) and hes given me a good formal heads up on care and maintainance of rotary engines!
can´t wait to get her back! so i can give her a good claen and polish she deserves after her being in the garage so long! she will still have to stay in the garage until i get back from canada in july! but she´s being looked after very well in my absence!
well still i wish you all the best for the future, i´m asured you´ll be taking good care of your baby!
