Oh dear, the silver RX-8's are over-represented in unfortunate accidents/incidents.....best thing to do is sell it and get a Winning Blue one. Unless your middle name is magixpuma...

its a little myth thats floating around that sunlight silver cars for some reason are more prone to damage and calamity...so far the jury is still out, but a silver spontaneously catching fire isnt doing much do debunk it...

thats still terrible, i hope they fix it up right.

I would bet that if you did the math, you'd find that many more silver rx-8's are out there, and that may be why the higher numbers of accidents. that's what I tell myself, since mine's silver. :D

rosebug, could you see any obvious starting point for the fire under the hood....Did the fire start on the left or right side of the engine bay, for example??

wow that sucks. Glad I didn't go with silver

without looking at the car, or seeing anything, it'd be hard for us to figure out or guesstimate how the fire was started

good luck

holy ****!!! i was just sort of joking. damn curse.

the first really bad wreck of an rx-8 recorded on this forum was when an idiot in philly was flying down deleware ave at reportedly over 100 lost control, hit somethin, flipped air born and landed on a car driven by a guy, who died, on his way home from a ball game. ever since then it seems every other wreck/calamity we heaar about is of a Sunlight Silver car.

The 3rd gen RX-7 issue was a defective oil seal on the compressor side of the high boost Hitachi turbo. Oil would leak into the exhaust stream, get hot but not burn, and flow back to the cat where it would stick, and clog the cat.

Excess backpressure would cause engine stress, overheat the engine compartment, and dry out the fuel lines which would eventually burst and cause fires that totaled cars.

Mazda's response? Thicker fuel lines, of course. Fix the symptom, not the problem.

Could you inform me on how to report a Moderator for foul language?

Just kidding, glad I got Red and can't wait to hear the followup on this, and hope he is a troll

I am am about converted to the "Curse of the Silver". My 8 is Silver, and I have had some terrible luck with curbs. NEVER have I messed up a rim on any car i have ever owned or driven, and I have been driving sticks since I was 13. (grew up in the country) I have scuffed three of my four rims now. Yes, I know that is mostly my fault, but I SWEAR I have never had this happen in another car of mine. I dont get it personally, so I am blaming the CURSE! lol

No,no,no! Ya got it all wrong. This is Mazda's fault. (I guess you don't understand how things work here. It's ALWAYS Mazdas fault.)

You see, the rims are made of a special, secret, cheapo concrete-attracting alloy. So whenever you get near a curb, you're dead. Saves Mazda mucho yen. :D

Use your silver touch-up paint. Works great on the rims. I have bottles of both Sunlight Silver and Titty Gray touch-up paint for curb boo-boos. No need for the gray yet, but since my wheels are silver, and therefore cursed . . . . . . .

Back on the subject. To the O.P., I think everyone here feels your pain on this. Please be sure to let us know what the cause of the fire was when you get it diagnosed, so that we can remain informed and prevent the same fate with our own cars if possible.

Update from Rosebug!

The car is at the Mazda body shop. They are trying to tell me it was vandalism--someone threw something hot on the car that slid down the windshield and caused a fire that burnt across and down. I still don't know if there was engine damage.
Anyway, I'm still waiting to hear about estimates for repairs. Are there parts available for major repairs--new windshield, new wiper arms and guts, a lot of plastic molding, etc. I don't see how they can replace/repair some of it without dismantling/removing engine, etc. Although, I know nothing about the mechanical parts of a car.

Man that is a major hurt there. Hope they can fix the stuff without removing the Rotary. But if they do you should be ok as longs as its clean when they put it back together. sorry to hear this.
