My RX8 driving and my GF's Miata Driving

So im bored and thought i Would start a thread that reflects the differences in my driving of my RX8 GT, vs my Girlfriends Mazda Miata.

What sucks? She has a nice car, but she drives it like an old lady! she even admitted it to me that "im probably one of the only people who buys a sports car and doesnt ever drive it like one"

Me on the other hand: I have a 238HP high-revving rotary under my command how do you THINK im going to drive? I love revving the **** out of it, taking corners at twice their rated speed and such. She gets so pissed at me when she's riding along in my 8. I also like to sit sometimes and just rev the engine to hear it, and she gets pissed telling me "it wastes gas" (yeah it does) BUT i get paid for milage on my car for work so Its not costing ME anything Oh yeah the other argument she gives is that revving it up to 7 or 8K "damages" the engine. Which is not true, i mean its a rotary its DESIGNED to rev that high, i told her redline isnt till 9K so dont worry.

Somtimes it kinda sucks, i mean I have this powerful sexy car, but can only "enjoy" it when im alone with it. (sounds kinda weird huh) but seems other people either dont understand the nature and abilites of my car, or are all worred about wasting gas, or something on it. Blah!

The new 2006 Miata is overall, a better car than the RX-8. I have raced both cars at the Mazda Zoom Zoom event and I think the Miata has a better design. I still prefer the 8 to the Miata and admit the 8 will out race the Miata. However, that's not what the Miata is about.

What I liked more about the Miata was the clutch movement and shifting. It was superior to the 8. It was smoother and the gears are easier to find. The clutch engagment was precise and on the mark each time. The instrument cluster (especially) and dash design were also significantly better. The car was also more comfortable and the clutch was positioned more reasonably with the other pedals.

It just seems that more time was spent on the Miata than the 8. That said, I love the 8 and so I bought one. I think it is an amazing car and I have no problems with the drivetrain. It is just that the Miata is a notch better. I recommend taking one for a test drive and I you'll see what I mean.

I would have to sum it up as saying the new Miata reminds me more of my 85 RX-7 than anything else.

some of us are stupid and end up in trouble when we drive our cars they way they were meant to be driven. It sucks to live in such a law-enforcement obsessed country.

Take it to the track to drive it the way it was meant to be driven, no law-enforcement there. One will better understand the "nature and abilities" of the 8 on a track too, rather than just driving stupid like on the streets.

Put some synthetic manual transmission fluid in your 8, you will see a big difference.

Our car doesn't even get to come alive in 2nd gear before it is in excess of most speed limits. Take it to the track? I do, but lets face it, you're talking at best 100 hours of track time a year. If I was paying 30k for just that, I would have got a Radical.

Let's face it; responsible driving and being in excess of the speed limit are not always mutally exclusive activities. Those limits were chosen to set a lowest common denominator of conditions, driver skill, and equipment that the car-dumb general public can meet.

But this is not necessarily an argument about speed limits. The question is can you legally enjoy a sports car on public roads? My answer is that it is increasingly harder and harder, and this is unforuntate for those individuals who wish to explore some percentage of their machine's capability.

Is there a track open 24/7 where I can drive? Is there a track that won't charge me 190/90 minutes like NASA does? That's 12k a year if I get 100 hours of track time! And I'm not talking about being at 8, 9, or 10/10th, but even 4 and 5th's of our cars capabilities put us in excess of most roadways legal limits.

I autocross or go to the track nearly every weekend, so don't tell me about taking it there. But it makes me a sad panda that its essentially illegal to enjoy my car on public roads.

Well, assuming you don't have to buy the land, you could build your own track:

15ft wide, 1.5miles long, 3-5inches thick (asphault) for approximately $675,000.

Heck yeah. If I had that kind of cash for car's, I'd rather have my own track and a cheap car than just a Carrera GT or whatever.

Hey toxin440, you might want to point out to your girlfriend that you need to rev it from time to time. Somewhere in this forum it explains the consequences of not reving it every now and then. The engine is self cleaning and in order for it to do that you have to rev it a little or it will die sooner than it should!

Here is some info on that
