My visor "melted" today, too.
I went to my step-uncle'ss wedding today. When I parked there my mom told me I should probably put my sunshade in the window since it was hot and sunny, so I did, as well as pushing the "tilt" for my moonroof. About four hours later when I was going to leave (had somewhere I needed to be) I went to take the sunshade out. When I flipped up the visor it immediate fell back down most of the way. I tried to push it back up and it wouldn't stay. I then looked at it more closely and saw that it had split at the seam on the outside seam by the hinge and separated partway across. My step-dad I couldn't make it stay up or pushed forward, so it was hanging in my way, and it wasn't split enough to pull off, either (I tried). My stepdad ended up getting some duct tape from his brother's neighbor to try to tape it together to get it to stay up, which didn't work. My mom and I then got "creative" and got the paper towels out of the trunck and put that across the fabric on the headliner so we could run the duct tape from the flipped up visor to the glass on the moonroof. That held it pretty well for awhile but the hot sun ended up melting the tape loose from the moonroof so the visor kept falling down. When I got home I pulled all the duct tape off and used clear mailing tape to wrap around the visor and then run it across from the far end of the visor to the far side of the sunglasses holder/moonroof buttons console on the roof. I did that with three pieces going across. That is holding up in kind of a hammock position so that it isn't drooping in my way.
Now I have to call my dealership on Monday (too late in the day for the service department today) to see about getting one ordered, if they don't have one, and making an appointment to get it put on.
The light on my visor mirror and everything else in the car still works fine. The seam just split open. Why couldn't it have happened on the passenger side????
I'll post pictures after I get then downloaded to my computer.

Heya,
It has happened to both of mine already. The dealer will replace.no worries. I don't remember exactly how it works (been a while since it happends to me) but there is an odd shaped piece of metal in the visor where it connects to the swivel point. When the plastic visor heats up enough, instead of the piece of metal turning, all it does is pry the plastic visor apart at the seam.
Do a search...it has happened plenty of times.

I have no doubt my dealership will take care of it for me. I just will probably have to wait to get it done. With my work schedule that means if it's not available right now I would have to wait until Friday afternoon and hope the visor came in or then the next Monday morning. Otherwise I am off on vacation and I don't trust my mom to be driving my car since she just had knee surgery on her left side and I don't think she's capable of handling the clutch right now.
I wasn't too surprised that the visor went or even upset about it since I've heard about it enough and I know other people with different types of cars that have hard plastic visors that have done the same thing. It seems pretty common, actually. I was more embarassed about it than anything. Everyone at the wedding was just drooling and making a big fuss over my car and then that had to happen. Why couldn't it have waited until after I left??? LOL

LOL. I only use mine to hold my sunshade in. Otherwise the top cornes droop and it falls backward and doesn't fully cover the window.
A friend of mine is getting his replaced next Wednesday at his dealership when the visor is expected to come in, under warranty.

Both of mine failed within minutes of each other as did both of their replacements!
Still better than a bad diff.
I'm gonna see which dealer gives me the least grief to replace them again (probably X, though Berge is closer).

I always put my sunshade up, tilt my moonroof, and open the 2 quarter windows.

Mine didn't melt but it split at the seams where it mounts to the roof exposing all the wiring for the lights in it. I just took a screwdriver and undid the screws and unclipped the harness and threw it in my backseat. The dealer replaced it under warranty with no questions asked. It's about 100-105 here in TX and I think they use cheap quality plastics anyways.

I still don't understand how Bunny's have melted and not mine.

I have pictures from a couple weeks ago of 110, although I did see it get up to 114 on the temperature when I was somewhere inconvenient to get my camera and take a picture of it. My mom thinks that it was probably already going and this just finally killed it.

It's just another one of those things like flooding. It doesn't happen to most people, but obviously the people that it doesn't happen to dont feel the need to say so, so it seems like its happening to everyone. IMO, it's as popular as a UFO sighting.

wait a minute... wasn't bunnygirl just posting in the "what every mazda owner should know" thread about how even mentioning an issue like this was considered WHINING?!?!?!?
and to think you were calling flooding/engine replacement/squeaky brakes whining ...
hmmmmm....

Mine split just this year. I went through two Arizona summers (Ok, 1.5, not counting this year) without problems and thought I was home free.
Then on an early summer day this year (not even that hot, maybe 100) the drivers side split while holding up the sunshade.
Dealership (I used Buddulph) replaced it sitting where I parked it waiting for service.
So I think the theory should be that the sunshades are the problem! They mysteriously increase the suns power and overwhelm the adhesive in the visor! Something like the pyramid powers...
Now if we can only use this effect to add 50 HP to the RX-8!

Yup, I'm on my third one now (always the drivers side).
On my last one I drilled some holes (3) and ran some zip ties through the holes.
The worked well but it's nice to have a new one. It was on back order 3 weeks.
This is a big PIA!
Think MNAO will give us free service for a year now??? Yea! Right!
...oh, wait thats Culligan Man,
Never-mind...

You must have missed the part where I said I wasn't upset about it or surprised that it happened. It was just embarrassing when all these people are admiring your car and telling you how nice it is and then your visor is drooping there because it split open.
I didn't call engine flooding or replacement whining. The squeaky brake thing I did. Tons of brakes squeal. They still work and do their job. They just happen to make a noise.
In this case, my visor doesn't stay in any proper position so it doesn't work as intended. Different entirely.
In all the things that could go wrong, I would say this is a very minor issue.
It's amazing how everyone overreacts and jumps to conclusions lately.
