Need Help with stuck Fuel Door

I have an rx8 and the fuel door won't open. It sounds like the cable that opens it has come loose leaving the door in the shut position. I am low on gas and can't refill and there are no dealership near me. Is there a way to open the door without using the cable latch?

My first thought would be to pull away the carpeting on the left side of the trunk and see if you can see the cable and pull it from there.

If you don't want to damage anything, you'll need to access the cable. Depending on where it came loose (hopefully at the lever next to the seat) you can either pull the wire or the whole cable. If it came loose at the cover, I don't know if you can yank on the cable from inside the trunk or under the fender (probably have to move the fender liner).

If you have roadside assitance, call for a flatbed and have it brought to the dealer.

If it's an emergency situation (as in its more important to get gas than worry about scratches) you need a thin flat metal blade (butter knife? Maybe too wide) It looks like you could insert it at the 3 o'clock position, angle it because the latch is about an inch towards the center, relative to the edge of the cover. Then you'll have to either flex the metal latch to the left to bend it, or if you have a thin enough blade and delicate touch, you might be able to flip the dead bolt to the right and spring the latch.
