need help urgent!! (looking to buy an RX-8 in Pakistan)
hey all,
I couple of months ago i sold my 2003 rx8 to get a mercedes but then i came to realise that i miss that car terribly so i have now decided to buy a 2005 triptronic rx8...Only i dont know how good is the triptronic transmission is in rx8(my previous one was a manual)..need help from rx8 clubbers who are experienced with triptronic transmission to tell me how it really is...moreover since i live in pakistan, automatic seems like a reasonable choice in overcrowded areas of my city..moreover, the mileage on the car am abt to buy is 47000 kms but well maintained...and i want a car which i can keep for more than 5 yrs..my other question is that is this mileage too high for a 2005 rotary??is it really true what ppl say that rotary fails after 60000 kms or is it just a myth??my first experience wid dis machine has taught me alot on how to take care of it but still doubt remains...plz clubbers..help me in making this choice...all suggestions and advice would be highly appreciated..regards

Perhaps this thread is newer than when you had your last 8 and now. It has a lot of useful info about longevity and clearing up the facts from the myths.

The RX-8's automatic is not a tiptronic transmission. It's just a standard slushbox with paddle shifts that duplicate the + - gates on the shifter.
Given your location and circumstances, I'd recommend against getting an RX-8. If you only drove it a few thousand miles a year, it might last the 5 years. Maybe. As many disadvantages as the RX-8 has in places with supporting dealer networks and easy access to parts and vendors, it's just going to make everything that much worse when you don't have that kind of access.

A tiptronic is also a slushbox like Mazda's...it's just the brand name used by a few manufacturers, like Porsche.
Steel - if you want an automatic, look for one that has the six speed. In the US '04 and '05 automatics were 4 speed, coupled to a 4 port engine. From '06 onward they used 6 speed slushboxes coupled to a 6 port engine. I don't know the year combinations outside of the US, but you should be able to tell number of speeds from the writing on the gear ****.
