Exclamation Need knowledge!!!!!

Ok, as most of you know, I had a poll about what my next mod should be. From that poll I concluded it that a short shifter would be best. Now, dont flame, but I dont know much about the benefits of a short shifter, or what brand, or how much. I heard AFE was good. So please, someone give me their long explanation of what a short shifter will do to increase my performance and also how much itll run me and if AFE is a good brand. I just need more info on it so please help me out guys. Also, if anyone feels theres another mod around the same price thatll be more beneficial, feel free to say it. Thanks for the help once again!!!!!!!!!

i will take a short stab.. it will cost you i think 271 bucks..

here is where you get it...

http://www.axialflow.com/products.htm

the other one is mazda speed, and not as short and a lot more money..

now, if you have to ask how it helps performance you dont need it.. you need to spend more time reading and learning..

helpful links...

I didn't want to post to also avoid the flames, but I too don't know what a short shifter is or does...Chalk 1 up to me never having a MT to drive around a lot before you flame away...

I was going to stay silent til someone explained it but since swoope is a pretty hard guy to pry information from, anyone care to add in on what it does?

The engineering is aimed at optimizing the geometry for the shortest shift practical for road driving. We concentrate on "feel" or "quality" of the movement. Typically there is a reduction in the height of the **** for a better ergonomic relationship with the driver. The factory has to make compromises for the driver who is really not the sports type. We cater to the small segment who are looking for a real relationship with their car. It is hard to express the accuracy of placement and if you track your car this means better times.
-This is right from the first link he posted - you want a spoon for that?

....for crysake! just click on the links - he's not flaming, just pointing out that the info is there for you if you will only read it!

not to sound like too much of an ***... but doesnt the name "short shifter" kinda give it away...? Though there are other advantages I guess... just kinda thought the name was somewhat self-explanatory

Call me crazy but doesn't the RX8 already come with a short shifter?? So why do you need an even shorter one. I just think that its a waste of money...but that's just my opinion.

<frustrating the [quote] button no longer does a damn thing! Broken - broken - broken - broken! {end of rant}>

Go find a friend with one, try it. You'll discover that the OEM shifter is closer to a floor mounted pickup stick shift when compared to the RP short shifter.

Think bolt action rifle...

Renesis07 did you get a chance to read the links provided? We hope it's been helpful for you. The next thing I would do is check your regional forum listed at the bottom of the main page and see if someone in your area has one installed and can let you drive it to see the difference.

In simple terms, it will make the distance you have to move the shifter to change gears much shorter. It should also take some slop out of it (the small amount of movement that you can notice when it is in gear).

Thanks Stealth. Would have read the wall of text in the 2nd link but I'm at work 80% of the time while I'm on the boards and didn't have a lot of time to read through it all.

As for the first link, can't open that since I'm at work, and the third, I'm not THAT stupid

Thank you for the spoon feeding I do appreciate you giving us the short answer.

^^^ Huh? That is exactly what a forum is for.

The search part is just to see if your personal question has already been answered.

i agree, the name 'short shifter' should've gave it away. but if you've been driving automatics all your life, chances are, you won't know what it is.

no, the rx8 doesn't come with a short shifter already. i've always thought the throws were long, or not short enough compared to other high performance cars. the new civic si has shorter throws just for comparison.

the afe short shifter makes a BIG difference and will make you want to drive your car more and shift more often. you won't regret this mod if you get it.

Hmmm...Interesting. I've only driven 3-4 manual cars in my life and only for no longer than about 30 minutes on each, I guess driving it day to day a short shifter would make a difference but coming from someone with no experience I guess it's just something you'll have to have for awhile to notice a difference...Does it really cut THAT much time off shifting?

And just incase anyone is wondering what cars I've driven, I've driven a later 90's model eclipse with a short shifter on it, stock talon TSI, my dads C5 Vette, and an F-150, but then again that isn't really a car so it doesn't really count...make that 3 then.

Can I flame you on a different point?

Why are you taking a poll on what to do with your car? Why not decide yourself? I can see asking if people will think this or that is worthwhile, looks nice, whatever. But it's your car, and you should be pleasing yourself, not us.

I know, I dont have all that much spare cash to blow on mods for my car, so Im just getting opinions of what other people liked and what is worth the money. Im not COMPLETELY retarded people, I knew that the throws were shorter with a short shifter, but I guess I wondered if there was anything more to it. Im sorry to sound so ignorant about it but thats why I start threads and get my questions answered by people who know what they're talking about!!! If that answers the question of why I started a thread asking about something. I enjoy starting threads ranting about tiburons and flaming on 350Z's, but I mainly come to this forum to get my questions answered by OTHER RX-8 owners, Im sorry if thats pissing some people off.

well, though the name "short shifter" gives the general idea behind what it does, there are a few other benefits. I'm not sure if you've ever had this issue, but before I got the RP short shifter and I would try to quicky shift into 2nd from 1st, it felt like there was a wall and I would miss the gear. Since getting the short shifter I've never had that problem, missed a gear maybe once or twice and those were purely my fault
