Need New Motor Stuck at Dealership

Well i took my car in this morning. It's been hard to start lately. The staff was very friendly.

The tech said the motor needs to be replaced but that i need to produce receipts of my oil changes and take them in tomorrow. I have some back home that i'd need my dad to scan for me. But for the last year I've been doing my own oil changes and i don't think i have all of the receipts of oil i purchased.

How important are the receipts. I've searched and read up quite a bit I'd hate to have to raise hell to get my warranty fulfilled.

What should i do? Thanks in advance.

how important depends on dealerships. some strictly want them and some don't.

Did you pay by credit card? If you did, then call your credit card provider and ask them for records for that year.

All they will say is "purchase at autozone <address here>" they wont say what the item actually is.

I have been keeping all my receipts and only lost one oil receipt so far but have the one for the filter I bought. When you keep your receipts you should really copy them and keep the copy as well because the receipt paper can and will fade and then you would be SOL, just info for next time.

At least you got some sort of a proof and it's better than nothing. The dealership might accept that or not. Just try it and it might go thru, who knows, you won't know until you try it.

when I had my engine replace, they never ask for my oil change receipt.

it could be that the tech who worked on my car knows I'm a freak and do as often as "1K oil change" so he didn't bother to ask me for anything

it could be that the dealership is nice.

who knows? but if they ask you for it, just give it to them, in the manual it saids it's 7500 miles, most people drive 15K a year so that means u just need to show them like 2-3 oil receipt from the start of the year and another one at the end of the year. that should be enough.

Got the car back this morning. Kinda funny remembering what a fresh clutch feels like. She's running great but is still a bit hard to start. My last resort is the fuel pump. Gonna try giving the sock a clean this weekend.

So i got a little update and could use some help.

I drove the car for a solid week and all was fine. Then a CEL came on so i took it back to the dealer yest.

Today they call me and tell me that my rear bumper melted when they were test driving it. They said that the cause of the exhaust heated up from misfiring. They now want to charge me $600 for new wires and coils. THE COILS are brand new. I put them in myself about a week before they replaced the engine. They also want to say that my bumper melted because i have big exhaust tip (greddy).

what am i supposed to do now?

The cause may be your cat.

The CEL was for the 02 sensor. Not sure the exact code. He said they checked the cat and that it was fine. He also said that he hooked the car up to something and said it detected misfires.
I'm gonna go in tommorrow with my old coils and he said we can try putting them on and see if it misfires.

There was a thread with a photo in this forum where the cat looked fine on visual inspection, the honeycomb lattice inside looked fine, but when it was removed and shaken gently, crumbled catalyst started pouring out.

Also IIRC, the cat failure didn't throw any codes directly indicating it.

IMO this is why it is worth the few extra dollars to have the dealership do the oil changes. Everything is logged in their computers.

That works great for those that keep detailed records and a dealership that does not give you a hard time about the documentation.

The cost of time and cash for having them do the maintenance vs the cost of an engine replacement on your dime if they don't accept your records. It's a decision everyone has to make and weigh.

I opted for the latter.

OP, if the O2 sensor threw a code then....it's probably your O2 sensor failing.

I know, the dealers sometimes can't figure this out, but at least we are here to educate them.

And you can get misfires from the O2 sensor failing, or WAY lean or WAY rich (or both, or just really unstable, etc...) My cat failure roasted my O2 sensor, though it didn't throw a code for it, I could just tell something was wrong when the dealer insisted there wasn't

O2 sensor from Mazmart was $200 something, and paid a local garage $25 to install it since I was unable to get it loosened myself.

Don't let them charge you for the coils and plugs, especially if you know that they are new. If they are insisting on doing something, then insist on them doing something about the code that was pulled...the O2 sensor

Not sure which of my comments you are referring to Team. I don't trust dealers for anything but a compression test, and since 1 out of 3 of those were done incorrectly, even that is a stretch.

I opted for dealer oil changes. They were free for the first two years. Since then, list price is $30, most of the time I have a coupon for $20 and sometimes for $10. Dealer is 10 minutes away, and they always get me in and out within 45 minutes.

You'd think that would be obvious to the dealer. I don't think I'd take even free oil changes from one that did not figure that out.

When they replace an engine are they required to install new coils? I'm trying to figure out whose liable for my melted bumper. Im basically gonna be assed out a couple hundred bucks if its my fault.

No, Coils are not part of the engine core warranty. HOWEVER. there are times that some dealerships might be able to somehow slip it into the deal without customer paying a penny. That's rare, tho.

Greddy Exhaust shouldn't melt your bumper, cuz last I remember it extends all the way out. I guess someone has been idling/revving your car like there is no tomorrow ...

as for O2 Sensor. it might go out of range but not enough to trigger a CEL. most dealership these days depends HEAVILY on whatever they see on the computer. They don't even bother to check the value threshold. I've been to one who is good enough to check everything. and replaced my throttle body when I was still under warranty.

Thanks.

I took my old coils in and they put on a new set of wires. Car is running fine now and they want me to pick it up tomorrow. They said they wont cover the melted bumper since the coils and wires were mine on top of that the fact i have aftermarket exhaust. Guess ill be shopping for a new rear bumper.
