Thanks. I'm in that new car (and not just any new car) state of euphoria right now :-)
My insurance bumped me up $200 every six months, but I was already getting ready to move to Citizens Insurance anyway, as they had quoted me 40% less on my previous car.
Hey.....what's your opinion on synthetic oil vs. fossil? I have always used Mobil 1 in my Jeep, but someone on here was quite emphatic about NOT using synthetic oil in the RX8.

There's a LONG thread about synthetic oil in the tech garage section. Needless to say, it's one of those things that have been beaten to death. As for 100 miles of damage, well, there are people on this forum who have broken in their cars using the "hard break-in" method. Me personally, I've made sure to keep the engine below 6,000 rpm, but it saw plenty of 80-100% throttle in the first 50 miles of use. Evaluate the arguments, and make your own conclusion.

Dude, I just bought mine in February of THIS year and I already have 4500 miles on it and counting... do you only drive yours on the weekends or something???
Ya, my job provides me with a Chevy Blazer company car which I use for most of my daily driving in the brutal LA traffic. Stop-and-go and idling are hard on the RX-8. Plus they pay for gas in the Blazer. But out-of-town trips, or the local mountains, or LA freeways on weekend mornings with no traffic ... WAHOOOOOO ! ! !

Dave,

Got my 8 in August, 2003. I found one in DTW that was the exact package and color I wanted and pursuaded the dealer to swap one of his three allotted 8's to sell me the first one in GR. Only problem was, the dealer owner's son had put 700 miles on "my" car (remember 8's arrived in July, 2003). I took the car on understanding that if I found a mark on the car or any problems, they'd get it back. Almost three years later and 26K miles, its averaged 17.49 mpg with a high of 21.5 on one trip. I observed the "stay below 4500 RPM" recommendation up to the 1K mile point and have been driving it like I stole it, ever since. I agree with taking it easy for break-in, but to give the impression that the Mazda rotary engine is fragile... nope, don't think so! My Rx7 had 140+K miles on it when I sold it and never had a major engine problem!

Glad to hear you made the right choice. Congrats, dave - enjoy responsibly! Until the break in is over, anyway. Then be sure to wait for the beep!

Hey Charlie,

Did you buy your 8 at Borgman? Just wondering whether "the owner's son" you referred to is the same guy who sold me mine. What package do you have? I'm just curious as to what all is available as options, even though personally, the base model includes everything I would ever want and then some. Mine happened to have the Sport package, which includes the xenon headlights, fog lights and stability control. Again,. not things I would have required or paid extra for, but nice to have.
I also bought the two year extended warranty, which I'm now second guessing myself on a little bit. But the price was surprisingly reasonable for the additional piece of mind.
Anyway, so far I'm lovin' it!
