Need some help from the rotary pros!
Hey there rotor-heads
I need some help from you guys and gals... last November, I got my girl out of her 1995 Rustang and into a brand new 2005 RX-8 6spd. Got a chance to drive it home from the dealership since she didn't know how to drive a stick, and I must say its a terrific car.
Its her birthday in July, and I wanted to get her something for the RX-8... but I wanted to get some advice from the rotary pros. I'm looking to spend no more than $400 bucks on her...
I know an intake is right in that ballpark, but I've read that the K&N Typhoon system causes the RX-8 to occassionally stall at idle?? Is this true? Also, the AEM intake is ridiculously expensive... any reason for this? Are gains typical with an intake for a rotary (2-4 hp)?
Also, she really loves the R-Magic spoiler... the problem is that I can only find it at one website, and its 1100 bucks . Do you guys know if there are any quality replicas, or even a cheaper place I can get this spoiler (even a carbon fiber replica would be cool).
Any other suggestions for "light" mods are welcome, even exterior or interior stuff, that runs in the $0-$400 range.
Thanks again!

might want to check out www.racingbeat.com, they seem to have very high quality products for the 8

i agree with the racing beat intake. it's called the REVi, and it seems to be the best aftermarket intake out right now. i think it has gains of around 4hp peak.
the rmagic spoiler, is a bit of a take off of the lip spoiler available in other markets. you could try getting one from mazdaparts. its $375. there is a picture at that address, and if you click on the thumbnail, you get a larger view.

The Racing Beat is the best intake on the market--K&N causes idle problems--and the AEM isn't really proven yet from what I understand. Exhaust are more for aesthetics but she might like the sound of the Racing Beat or Borla exhaust.

REVi Intake Adds An Average 1.95 HP Over The Stock System - 2000-8900 RPM Range
Peak RPM Gains Over Stock - 3.5 HP @ 8300 RPM
Maximum Power Gain Over Stock - 5.8 HP @ 8900 RPM

coupled with different exhaust, you might be able to claim such numbers, but by itself, 9-10hp is unlikely...unless you are talking about at the crank
don't get me wrong, the REVi is by far the best intake, and if i decide to upgrade the intake will be the one i go with, i just disagree with the claimed performance benifit.

only difference there is the intake?
what about enviornmental changes?
as in...same day (failing that, same temp/humidty), same gas (if not, same grade/brand, same blend...winter/summer, dynoed at the same place? if not on the same day, when was it calibrated?
~9hp is a lot to get from an intake (typically), and 33% more than is mentioned on the website.

It was dyno'd same day practically same hour, and the car was kept on the dyno during the installation of the intake so that the wheels did not change position on the dyno rollers.
