I have a stick. I would only buy this car in a stick. But, I've always owned sticks for more years than you must be old. The RX-8 has more horsepower with the stick.
That said, I advise you to listen to your parents and get the automatic. Performance better with a stick. Hah! Not for you. If you don't know how to drive one, certainly the automatic will be faster every time. Even if you do know how to drive one, if you're into street racing (big no no - but I won't tell), getting the timing off the light is tricky with a stick. An automatic, just push the throttle and hold on tight. You're only going to 35 or 45 mph anyhoot (unless you're a serious law breaker), so if your timings off, all the horsepower in the world isn't going to help you much in the short drag.
The RX-8 has something cool for wanna-be stick owners. It has steering wheel paddles that allow you to pretend you have a stick.
If you still have to have a stick, do all us car lovers a favor. Learn to drive a manual transmission on an old Nissan Sentra, Toyota Tercel, or like type general cheap transportation type of automobile. Don't punish the beloved RX-8. Not only should it be a crime, but you'll end up paying a lot more for damages incurred during your learning by trial and error.

The auto will be more convenient in many ways... Easier to drive since you've never driven Manual... Also... If someone else needs to drive your car who has not driven manual, they can, and you won't have to worry about them messing something up...
The auto also has a lower final gear ratio... Which should save you a little money a gas.
The manual does have more power.... It also revs higher.
If you're buying this car based on its looks, you might as well go auto.
How old are you?

The 8 was my first stick shift car. My buddy drove it home from the dealer for me and I started to take it out on the quiet side streets of my neighborhood day by day and slowly into traffic once I got comfortable with my performace. It took me a weeks worth of driving to get comfortable enough not to stall and I now 3 months later you'd never know this was my first stick car. No regrets.

Also, I've got 10 years driving experience, 3 accidents I've been through and countless close calls. I'd call myself an above average driver so that helped with my choice. If you're still in your teens and thinking of buy the 8 as a stick, you might want to rethink your choice, especially if your parents are paying for a portion or all of the car.

Godzilla might I ask how old you are.. Not to be discriminative or anything but you type like a young asian. I chat with a lot of asians around my age (I'm 16, asian) and they type just like you. I'm just curious that's all.
If I might add, I don't have a licence but I have driven my parent's auto cars (all four cars are auto, very typical of malaysians to have auto) and I've driven stick only twice. My experience (considering I've never taken lessons and nobody tought me to drive) is okay I guess. The first time I tried it I stalled it about 5 times. The next time I drove I didn't stall at all because I had friends to tell me how to do it. Driving stick is actually very easy, maybe because I'm a drummer I'm able to coordinate my feet better, I don't know.

Tell your parents that the resale on the MT will probably be better than AT. You won't be lying and there something in it for them.
Given that this is a performance car and the buyers are typically performance oriented, I predict that the MT will sell better on the used market and command a better price.
Of course if you plan on keeping the car and driving it til its bitter end, then this point is moot.

This is not a good car to get an auto in. Many cars the engine is the same whether you get manual or stick, but the Mazda RX8 engines are completely different. First you lose 40 hp going from stick to auto, and this car does not have torque to begin with so the auto is that much slower. The engine of the stick has 6 ports, the auto is a 4 port design. If you are looking for potential the stick car has more. The difference in auto vs. stick 0-60 times is huge in this car. 9.5 sec vs. 5.9 sec. If it is strictly for show then the auto is OK, but if you want to accelerate, or beat anybody then get the stick.
