So, after religiously checking the oil level after every other tank of fuel during the first 1,000 miles, the warm engine is still registering an oil dipstick reading of full.
This is more than a little surprising to me, as I had expected to see at least some oil consumption.
Is this likely to change?
How often is everyone else here finding themselves having to add oil to their (all flash updated) engine?

Oil usage depends on how hard you are driving. So if you are being carefull during the breaking time the oil usage will be low. If you are driving hard, then you should see some usage by 1000 miles. I have 19K on my 8 and add a qt. every 2500 to 3000 miles (only once between changes). Your oil level was probably a little over full (no problem with the rotary) or some slight changes in level or drain back time, so you don't notice that you have actually used some oil.

Did you read your owner's Manual? Or are you asking a technical question?
Technically oil needs to be changed for two reasons. One is contaminates build up in time in the oil. The oil filter removes some, but not all. Especially the acids and other chemicles primarily caused by blow by gas. The rotary does not have traditional blow by gas so this is not a major concern. (GM was actually considering a common oil system between the rotary enging and auto trans when they were working on the rotary.) The second reason is the heat and pounding applied to the oil tends to break up the long string molecules is oil, especially the additive packages. The breakup of some is actually good as they found out in WWII when much crankcase oil was just cleaned and reused. But there are many additives, like rust inhibitures that can be damaged. Now days oils have MANY additives and I am not a oil engineer so do not know the full affects. This second reason is probably a good reason to change your oil in your RX8. I never did on my older REPU or RX7s (with no problems), but do on my RX8 every 5K.

Not only should you change it, but IMHO, you should change it and the oil filter more frequently than what the owner's manual states is acceptable.
I change mine every 3k miles. Whether that's overkill is immaterial to me. I'd rather be safe than sorry.
