The Rx-8 will offer an automatic transmission and mazda said they wanted to keep the car under 30k.

From what I have read Mazda will offer a automatic but the engine will be detuned to protect the auto transmission.

Question

Why does the engine need to be detuned? There are plenty of high HP cars with autos out there.

Not as High Revving though. Detuned here in a sense not to rev as high. Not as many revs- Not as much power.

Just like the Touring-X Rx-7's in japan, they have a 20hp loss because its an auto tranny, same goes for the auto models here in the u.s

^ Put down the crack pipe, and step away from the keyboard. Easy now. No sudden movements.

Welcome.

Now is the perfect time to buy one. It's the end of the year and you can get one for a good price.

Make sure you get an 06 AT not 05 or 04 as it is more powerful and reliable.

Blame no tears.

But since we're on the topic, cars with torque characteristics like the 8 usually get "detuned" when switching to auto, so less HP but more torque lower in the rev range to match the ratios and characteristics of the auto.
