How dangerous it is depends on where you live No mater where you are, it's always nice to be able to garage the car if you can. Keeps the weather off and it's a bit of extra security!
As for going to the store, I usually park a bit farther out in the lot. I don't mind the extra walk and it burns a few more calories hehe (I sure as hell need it).
Couple things you'll need to know:
Paint Chips - Get used to it, no matter how you baby your car it's gonna happen. Just make sure to have a bottle of touch-up paint handy.
Daily driver(?) - Some people buy nice cars like that just to drive on the weekends. Other people who have a more modest budget (like mine) use their sporty car as their daily driver. Expect wear and tear (although waxing with Zaino helps alleviate the anxiety a bit )
As for basic engine knowledge, just ask lots and lots of questions. I'm sure there's an S2000 or EVO forum just like this one that'll have all the info you're looking for. Also ask questions whenever you take your car in for service, usually the guys at the dealership don't mind explaining a few things.
And for my last bit of 2 cents, know how to do the basics on your car (if you don't already): check/change oil, tire pressure, wipers, etc. Drives me nuts seeing people not knowing simple stuff like that
Most important of all, have fun with the car! It's your first one, you only get that once in your life.

For the S2000, a car I considered before buying the RX8, go to http://www.s2kca.com/forums or http://www.s2kca.com/.
(NOTE: I checked the FAQ page to see if there was a prohibition against posting other Web sites. Some forums are sensitive to it, some aren't. I didn't see anything prohibiting this practice. If it is against the rules, please let me know and I won't do it. Thanks.)

The S2k will always crop up as its a fantastic car. High redline, very quick its just superb!
Try them both, I'm in the same boat, I haven't got a clue which one I'm going to go with, both would be nice

The S2k is being discontinued. A new version will be out next year.
It depends upon what you want the car for.
Johnny Boy Racer? Straight line buy a Mustang. 18 mpg
Handling good looks, go for RX 8. 16mpg.

As for learning how to do mechanical things on the car, there are great DIY ("do it yourself") threads on most enthusiast car websites; I have used many of them on the S2k site, and I assume there are lots on the Evo site.
One caveat--The enthusiast world abounds with stories of Mitsubishi cancelling warranties when it discovers (gasp!) that people actually drive one of these cars on the track, or in an autocross. I have no idea how prevalant this move is by Mitsubishi, which seems incredibly stupid, but it is enough for this track junkie to stay away from Mitsubishi. If I feel the hankering for a AWD beast, I'll go for the STi just for that reason.

what about the RX8?
These guys have infinitely more patience than I do...
I think that you need to ask yourself what you want out of a car...besides performance that is.
What kinda of practicality are you looking for?
Do you have to deal with cold weather?
Do you have the cashflow to pay for gas? At premium grades if necessary?
Can you afford insurance? Different cars carry different premiums...
Any performance car is gonna have tradeoffs. You need to figure out what tradeoffs are acceptable to you.
For me, I wanted a fun to drive car, with a healthy amount of performance, that looked good, and was well put together. The RX8 hit the bullsmark for me.
So what do you want?
