new car - first week

What might I expect from the first service my dealer tells me I need within the first week of taking delivery?

Bought a new Grey 6 speed GT last Monday the 20th and haven't had time to put more than 50 miles on it. No I am not accepting offers to help me rack up some numbers on the odometer - but thanks in advance for the offers.

I was told the plugs were going to be replaced - Can someone tell me why? Not that I don't have confidence my dealer - I know, I because of the way modern dealerships are run, a girl has to be ready. Looking forward to your help to be an "informed consumer"

Did they say if it was a recall?

I'd be surprised if it was the 4206F recall. Cuz shouldn't that have been done before she took the car off the lot?

No they just said in the first week Mazda required me to bring it in.

I can only imagine what for. Why should it need new spark plugs in the first week? Should I bring a fresh chicken and a Voodoo Doctor too!

What should I be expecting?

i have paid for the fresh air and sunshine of a dealers back lot in the past - you know where they haven't a clue but the park it out side and charge for whatever!

I would say that it's a little suspicious, but your under full warranty, so don't pay one dime and make sure they know you're not going to do so. If it had the 4206F recall done, there might be a blue and white sticker on the inside of your hood....somewhere near the front.....near the latch.

PERFECTLY NORMAL

These engines are delivered to the dealerships with a temporary set of spark plugs. NORMALLY they are replaced at the time of PDI ( pre delivery inspection )
Someone forgot to change the plugs, so they have to have you come back.
Make sure they give you a free tank of gas.

Yes, it is normal. I just bought mine 3 weeks ago and at the time of delivery, Mazda is required to do the dealer inspection. Each new RX-8 is delivered with a set of new spark plugs.
I don't think there's any such thing as temporary spark plugs. The ones they pull are the same as the ones they install. I imagine this process is done to ensure the engine is performing correctly at the time of delivery and plugs are a sure indicator.

Really - I should ask for a tank of gas because they screwed up the PDI or do you think thats just the way they decided to handle the temporary spark plug issue? The car was on the lot for a while! 50 miles on the clock when I took it for the first drive.

so when I hand my keys to the service writer I should say that the plugs should have been changed before I took delivery and I want her to wash my car and fill gas the gas tank for the inconvenience?

Or would you make the request differently?

Pretty much. Or just ask them what they plan to do to make up for your lost time and leave it open ended.

Like was stated above, this is perfectly normal. During initial shipment and while on the lot, cars tend to be moved short distances and are often turned off before reaching full operating temperature. This can foul the plugs if done often enough causing poor performance and hard starts. New plugs are installed around the time of purchase as a courtesy to mitagate this.

The dealership doesn't owe you anything additional. The free tank of gas was for a recall that doesn't apply to you. If you don't have the time to go back and get a brand new free set of what would otherwise be very expensive spark plugs, just keep using the ones you have now...

Pre delivery instructions are on line somewhere. I don't see them in the bulletins on Rosenthal's web site, so it must be somewhere here. They cover things like making sure the battery is charged, as well as replacing the plugs. All nice things to do for a car that has been sitting for a while.

When I bought my 8, the salesman gave me a set of plugs. Later on I learned about the PDI, and realized those were the ones meant to be put in. But Zoomy had been on the showroom floor, had been used for a few test drives, and was in fresh running condition. I thought it was cool that they gave me the plugs - I never would have known if they hadn't.

Just like everyone said, it's perfectly normal. My girlfriend is a certified Mazda technician at the dealership and I just bought my new RX-8 a month ago from there and had my plugs changed the next day. It's called FQI (Final Quality Inspection), the PDI that someone mentioned earlier is when the cars gets unloaded off trailer and checked to make sure it runs, AC works, fluids are good, etc etc.

Any good dealership will fill your tank with gas and do a car wash.
They do not owe it to you, but they will give it to you anyway. This is their first chance to impress you, so they normally hook you up.

Yeah, impress you with their uncanny ability to create scratches and swirl marks...

I bought my 07 GT in June of 07 at Palm Springs Motors. I found 2 new plugs in the glove box jiust after delivery. Within a couple of days the dealership called me, told me about the plugs in the glove box, and requested me to bring the car by for them to be replaced. I just assumed it was some kind of recall. Didn't bother to ask about it, but car was in and out in 30 minutes, and runs great.

I wouldn't think you would need the recall sticker if the car is brand new. It should already have the updated flash, but I would ask them to make sure.

As someone else said, this is not the recall - it is because the plugs can get fouled from moving the car around at the ports, on the lot, etc. It is highly doubtful that they follow the proper rotary procedure in those places - warm up before shutting down.
