im saving $1500/year on insurance versus the 350Z, which pays for a lot of gas, so it isnt all that bad.

i get to about 125 miles at half tank. my old car would still be on "F" at 125 miles.

my gas gauge seems to be going:

50 miles at 3/4
110 miles at 1/2
165 miles at 1/4
and the past two tanks I've been at about 223 when the light has gone on.

The needle definitely slows down at different parts of the gauge. This tank I'm gonna try to drive it pretty low. Last time I filled up at 12.9 and the needle was pretty close to E.

E must stand for "Extra 3 gallons of gas"

The second tank, with a little more aggressive driving, I got 240 miles and a little over 18 MPG. The third tank I got 260 miles and just under 20 MPG.

I have no idea what gas the dealer put in, but I'd love to know. That'll probably be the best I ever do. As long as I'm in the 18 MPG range in my mostly highway driving, I'll be satisfied.
On the first tank, could the dealer have added a few gallons to top off the tank for you , without resetting the Odometer?

the gas mileage stinks at break in. and it stinks after break in. im getting the same mileage @ 3300 miles that I did @ 100 miles on the dang thing. lol. My typical 35/65 highway/city produces around 13-16 mpg. at best. and the road trip i took to austin doing 100% highway only yielded me 16.6 mpg... absolutely horrible... this thing drinks gas faster then i can drink beer. and thats an accomplishment......

Wow even going the other way from Austin to Dallas averaging 75-85 the entire way I still got ~22 MPG.

How fast were you going? Was it holiday traffic or an accident or something?

This forum has helped me make the decision on the RX-8 (Rather than G35) in numerous ways. Thank you all. I've already anticipated lower than par gas mileage on my 8, paper reads 18/24, and from reading you guys' feedbacks I would estimate around at 17-19 mpg if I do all high way driving. But to my shock, when I got home from the dealer, which was exactly 93 miles away (odometer reading), I was at the border of 1/2 tank already! Is there something wrong with my RX-8? Is it always this low? I mean....full tank is close to 16 gallons right? I wouldnt even hit 13 mpg! And My travel back home was all highway also. If anyone knows of anything about this or any advice, please help me out.
So you were running on the dealership's gas?

You'll put in around 14 gallons or so when you fill up. Expect around 16mpg.

It will get better, but never expect more than 16 city and 22 hwy or 18 average... And that is with a soft foot, if you drive her hard it's more like 12-14 city and 16-18 hwy and 14-16 average...

According to Racing Beat, you shouldn't exceed 4000 rpm for the first 1000 miles. Gradually increase maximum revs until 2000 miles, at which point you can go full throttle.

If you mean after break-in, it'd be a shame to shift a car with a 9000 rpm redline at 4000 rpm *every* time. Why did you buy the RX-8 if you're afraid to let it rev? When I test drove the car, the engine didn't seem to even come to life until I hit 5000 rpm. Let it go to 9000 rpm occassionally (and watch your MPG plummet )
