new engine @50k miles
Literally just broke 50 thousand miles.
Battery died, took into d-ship, mazda orders compression test. Numbers came back "okay", they didn't give me them though, but still mazda is sending me a new engine. Just days before the warranty expires.
Car was actually running very good apart from a gradual decline in high-end power. Never broke down or stalled once in 3 years of ownership, apart from one day where the radiator died and it overheated - not engine's fault.

I admit to finding myself thinking that the random "harmless" overheating that happens to people "only once" in their ownership is far more deadly than people realize...
I wonder how many of the replaced engines have overheated even once... vs the non-replaced past 100,000 miles that never have.

I agree.

My first died at 22k, second at 96k, and third at 127k. All maintained the same and each went unexpectedly. But heat definitely seems to speed up the rate of failure. You are not a true rotary enthusiast until you have an engine failure

My guess however was the granny drive trips back and forth from work for 2 years (I live like 3 miles from work) slowly allowed carbon buildup. So I went from daily redlining to barely breaking 40 mph in a day. I'd take the long way home sometimes just to open it up.

Automatic as well based on your signature. Based on the tribal knowledge on this site it appears that they have a higher failure rate. Though maybe I'm just hopeful that my 23k 2005 has more than another 27k left in it.
