Exclamation new engine after 4500 miles

i bought my rx-8 about 4 months ago, and recently found my car dripping oil in my driveway . I took it to the dealership i work at and they said the oil pan was rubbing against the transmission , so they ordered me a new oil pan seal to fix the problem, apparently they thought the seal was too loose. the next day when service was taking the oil pan off they found metal slivers in the oil. they then checked out the engine and found major damage inside the engine , and the metal was apparently from the timing belt shield. somehow when it was put on the factory didn't tighten the belt enough and it had started rubbing the shield and somehow deposited the metal it had been pulling off into the engine.

now i have been reading posts on here for about a month and have not seen any mention of such a problem. i was curious if anyone else has had any similar problems or if my car is the one that slipped through inspection.

What do you do at the dealership?

Are you sure you own an RX8?

It's pretty darn hard to damage something that a rotary engine doesn't even have.

ahhhhh hmmmm...... ah that would be no to the 1st question and the to settle your curiosity noone else has had a similar problem because a rotary doesn't have a timing belt/chain or any of its associated parts. i wonder some times if these posts aren't from smartass members of the rx-7club who think it would be funny to mess with new rotary owners.

I thought that rotary engines didn't have timing belts.

Edit: OK, they beat me to it.

Yes, the RX-8's are notorious for the problems that they have been having with their timing belts!

Well, i'll tell ya' what happened to me because I think that it's happening to all the rx 89s. You see I got my car last week, but I already have fifteen thousand miles on it, and the thing is that there is this rattling noise. So, I took it to the dealer who I thought was really cool but turned out to be a real jerk. They opened it up, and all eighteen of the pistons had come disconnected from the crank which caused metal to get lodged in the ram air intake for the turn=bine. Well, that would have been OK, accept that the turbine apparently (I really don't know much about these myself but this is what the guys from the dealer told me) the turbine also drives the cooling pump for the nuclear reactor, and long story short, it went Chernobyl and the reactor china syndromed. Man was I pissed! So, I told the guy that it had to be under warranty, but he said no because he knew that I'd been racin' it. Can you believe that s@@t! I'm so pissed.

(Yeah I love these posts. I think that I have now read one too many.)

This is hilarious! but I goggled "rx-8 timing belt" and got 19300 hits. Didn't try connecting arm or other variants.

I've been using lots of that carbuerator spray stuff in my carbuerator and it seems to really help with the rough idle problem. That and tapping on the distributor cap every time you check the oil, in order to keep the dust out.

All that aside as useless, it occurs to me that the quality of our trolls is seriously waning. I mean Ike isn't half as obnoxious as he used to be (just kidding Ike; I saw ya' up there.) Have a good one.

Dont forget to replace your rod bearings while you're there
http://www.overnightautoparts.com/ma...-bearings.html

Seriously, though, there is a chain at the front of the engine which drives the oil pump from the eccentric shaft (or at least there is on my FD which I had the oilpan off last week to reseal it) so it's *possible* (albeit extremely unlikely) that they could have been referring to that.

I know- this is so disappointing. This guy didn't even come back to argue and cause a ruckus. We used to get a lot of HaMSTrDCK and 8mYAss posters...I'm really starting to miss them.

Have you guys tried the new available Rolls-Royce Allison gas turbine engine option? Keeps with the rotary theme, turns 26,000 RPM at redline and makes 580 horsepower and 900 ft lbs of torque! Try it!

You think you like the rotary buzz? Try the gas turbine scream!

Gotta go change my timing belt ...

Stew, you enjoyed that way too much considering you were the one talking about gas washing oil off of the combustion chamber in a rotary. Kinda hard when they're mixed together. I guess 2 strokes don't work then. You should check out those nitrogen filled tires.

Umm... If that were true the Torque would have dropped to 117 or lower by the time it reached redline.... Who the hell would want that?

900 tq at redline would be 4455 horsepower.
