new engines at 80'000K?
wtf? i have a few friends that work at mazda, and they way the rotor engins in the rx8's predescessors would statistically start going bad at like 40'000K. most were shot by 80'000K. am i going to run into this wht my 8 when it gets up there. i hope mazda would not make such a big deal about this being the "offical" rotary engine if it could be f'ing up before 100K.

80,000K?
Wow, I'd be thrilled if I had an engine that would go 80,000,000 miles.
Seriously, there are lots of folks here who have had RX-7s with a lot more than 80,000 miles on them. Generally, replace the apex seals before permanent damage is done and you're good to go...

yo. that's good. geeze, these engins practially come assembled, and they're just bolted in and sealed up, and good to go, with that kind of production, how much quality assurance do we have?

Hey Smoke Weed!
I think that you might be a little paranoid, know what I mean?
Just like GM's crappy diesel in the 70's... the NSU RO80 and the FD3S have done more to damage the reputation of the rotary engine than anything else. Naturally aspirated rotaries are quite reliable. Don't listen to the haters.
Smaller hits man, smaller hits so you don't get so paranoid!

Eh? I hope you realize that replacing the apex seals means removing and tearing down the motor...its basically what you would do if the motor went "bad." In fact, broken apex seals are probably the main thing that goes bad (along with coolant seals if the thing overheats).

not to be a dick (no pun intended) but you obviously dont know crap. why would you post something that you obviously dont know anything about?
Generally, replace the apex seals bfore permanent damage is done and your good to go --This statement almost qualifies you for the Darwin award.
I have faith in you my friend. I have faith that you can reach inside and figure out why that statement you made is absolutely the 2nd most stupid thing ever said on this forum. (See IKE for the first).

Yeah - properly cooled and lubed (meaning clean oil) is the right answer. My '86 2gen has 215,000 miles and my '94 3gen has 94,000 and neither of them has ever had the engine apart. Treat any motor like crap and it'll grenade on you.

As far as the apex seal comment goes, I apologize for any confusion. I was once told that apex seal replacement was even recommended at 80K, this from a Mazda service manager when I bought my 1989 RX-7 GTU.

1) asking a Mazda service manager anything about the rotary
2) repeating it.
if you go to the trouble of replacing an Apex seal you may as well do a full rebuild as its basically the same thing.
