new to the forum with new rx8
This is my first post so be kind. I just bought my 04 black rx8 with 700mi on it and I love it. I am trying to break the car in but i could'nt resist lauching my car yesterday. nice 20 miles later the check engine light is on and stays on constant. I read in another thread about clearing the kam and nvram. I held the odmeter button till i saw the test message. I tried to do the trick with hitting the brake pedal 20 times but that didnt seem to do anything. Long story mad short the cel is still on. HELP? I also checked the oil the 1st time its about a qt low but what really concerns me is that there was a little white junk on the end of the dipstick. I hope its not water in my oil.

the cel is probably not a big deal, just take it to the dealer, it will be under warantee. the white stuff on the dipstick is also not a big deal. it is very common. from what i have read, it is just the oil getting wipped around.

I heard other members complaining after the dealers reflash the ecu's with different software. The car runs mint and i dont want to have any problems with it or loss hp. I'd rather try to clear the cel myself. please let me know if there is any other things to try before i have to resort to the dealers.I hate dealers and the uneducated people that work there.

Did you buy the car with 700 miles on it? Was it at a dealer or privately owned? If that's the case I wouldn't worry much about a breakin since it's most likely that the car has already been driven pretty hard on testdrives. I also doubt that cel has anything to do with you getting on it before the breakin was over, and everything to do with some other problem that you would have experienced no matter how long you waited to go WOT. Also, just to eliminate one possible reason, make sure your gascap is on tight. Grats on the new car BTW

What Ike said....
Just take it in, they will probably update the computer program, but the latest "flash" is actually pretty good, and prevents flooding etc.
The white oil slime is condensation, the oil boils off any water, and the steam gets into the dipstick hole and condenses, making milky foam. Only happens when it is cold out.

Congrats on the new car. Yeah, take it in for service 'cus it's all under warranty.
If you bought it at a dealer then all that should have been taken care of before you took delivery...
Maybe you can post some information about your location etc.

I bought the car used at a vw/ audi dealer. I checked the gas cap not it. I will have to try disconnecting the battery. If the new "flash" prevents flooding will it make my car slower by not injecting more fuel and possibly making the car slower. I thought the new "flash" was done because people were complaning about fuel economy. Here's some pics.
P.S. I've already been stuck in the drive way twice today after waxing my car.I wish it was'nt winter but i quess that's why i purchased the car for a steal

I live in PA and will be commuting to NJ everyday on route 80 for 65 mi. each way so I might be complaing about mpg soon. I bought the car used so I will need to check with a mazda dealer about the balance of my warranty.

onekwik7:
Wecolme to the world of winter w/ an 8.
If you dont have winter tires, I highly suggest you do....
I have had mine a month her in MI, and I am soooo happy to have winter tires. It beats spinning down the street and aiming for dry spots for traction....

rest assured, even with the flashes the 8 makes a solid 220 HP...oh wait, I mean 238 HP, or wait......

The fuel map originally came very rich to meet emission standards, so leaning it to prevent flooding likely INCREASES horsepower. More fuel isn't always better. Also, let me reiterate what was posted above: if you plan to drive in the cold/snow/sleet of Northern NJ and PA, winter tires are a MUST. Not optional.
EDIT: Oh yeah, congrats on your new car, you'll love it!

Will 16x8 50mm offset fd rx7 wheels fit on the 8? I was thinking of mounting snow tires on them. The car has'nt flooded out on me yet so hopefully I dont have that problem. Its a royal pain with my rx7 and dont want to have to deal with that problem with a daily driver.

Sell them on ebay and buy ones that fit the 8.

700 miles or 7,000? Hard to believe a car would turn up used with one 700 miles on it. Even a repo ought to get 90-days or more worth of miles.
Since you bought it used watch out for a clogged cat. If any dink flooded the engine before you got it he could have damaged you cat. It happened to me.
Don't be bummed though - it's all warrenty work so no big. I'd advise you to find a Mazda dealer with a service shop you can trust for quality work, good service and no b.s. You won't have to live there, but with such a long warrenty period you'll have plenty of chanes to make use of free services.

I scored bigtime, the car was owned by some rich guy with many cars and traded it for a audi. Thecar had 700mi on it on sat when i picked it up but now I drove it more than 600mi already. The cel(p0420) was cleared yesterday but it's back. I'm reluctently bringing the car to a dealer on mon. I just made the appt after picking up some sweet all season rubber mats that are indented with rotor shapes from the dealer.

Don't be reluctant about your free service work. There's nothing to fear about the current FLASH. It sounded like there were some mixed results with early, intermediate updates, but I don't see complaints about the current ones.
If the CEL is due to gas cap it'll be a quick service call. If your cat is clogging up you might be without your car 3-5 days while they order in the new parts, but you'll find your car is a whole new beast without all that extra back-pressure. win-win
